Have you seen Kelly's Directory South Wales, 1895?

Llanwnws (or Gwnnws) Parish:
"Board School (mixed), Upper Gwnnws, built in 1879, for 200 children; average attendance, 85; John Rees master; Miss A. J. Jones, infants' mistress"

John Rees is mentioned in an Oxford University study about the Tylwyth Teg (Welsh: the fair folk (lit) or fairies), from around 100 years ago: "Mr. John Rees, of the Council School, acted as our interpreter." You can see it on page 163 of the online book "The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries" by W. Y. Evans-Wentz (go*gle)

He was also listed as a member of the Cardiganshire Antiquarian Society in their transactions, vols 1-4 (probably early 20th Century as they refer to "as recently as 1903" in an article about Strata Florida!)

JOHN REES, Council School, Pontrhyd-fendigaid.
