1841 Census Berwick THOMPSON
« on: Sunday 27 March 05 23:14 BST (UK) »
I would be very grateful if someone with access to the 1841 census could find me the following:

Joseph THOMPSON occupation Baker age 45 in Berwick on Tweed, possible address Marygate. I would expect his household to include wife Mary, son Ralph and daughter Margaret.

I'm specifically interested in Joseph's birthplace, if this Census carried that info.

Thanks, Anne

Hi Anne the 1841 does not give place of birth just gives the county

1841 Census marygate Berwick on Tweed
Joseph Thompson 40 baker  born in county
Mary                      30            born in county
Margaret                 8            born in county
Ralph                      6            born in county
Mary                       2            born in county
There was a Thomas  couldnt read his second name so  dont take it as fact but it could be Hamilton,   he was a bakers apprentice living with the household
Hope it helps

Hi John

Can't thank you enough.  A birthplace would have just what I needed to be completely sure that I've identified Ralph's parents but it's good to know there's a Margaret (5 years older than the one I already have, so she possibly died young) and a Mary (whom neither I or anyone researching the family knew about). With the childrens' names now in this order my suspicion that they were using a naming pattern is strengthened.

I have one other Berwick 1841 query - for the name HANDYSIDE - could you help? I'll post it separately.

Again, many thanks

Anne

You are quite welcome
Do you have the Thompson family on the 1851
if not I could have a look it may give his place of birth
do you know if they were still in the Berwick area
send me the Handiside details and I will see if I can find then.

Hi Anne
80% of the 1841 Census for Berwick is really bad. some unreadable. you were lucky with Thompson
Did find one Handyside
George Handyside 20  --- ? not born in county
if you think that they could be some where nearby let me know and I will have a look.
Did you recieve the other info alright.
sorry I couldnt help with this one.

Hi John

I did receive the other info and have sent you a message.

It's only an off-chance that the Handysides moved to Berwick as early as 1841, I'll need to look further afield in Scotland for them.

Many many thanks for the time you have spent in helping me.

Best wishes

Anne
