Owen of Bryncogol/Llaniestyn ?
« on: Monday 31 May 10 22:30 BST (UK) »
I can find a family called Owen at the above farm (not far from Beaumaris , I think ) in 1841, but no trace of the family , farm (or indeed village) in any census thereafter . There would seem to be two different families , and at least three generations there in 1841 ( 4 different Ellen Owens ! ) .
I think the place might also be called ' Llwyncogau / Bryn Cogl , or variations of.
Can anyone help me with this , please ?

Hello

Just to make sure we have the right village, there are 2 places (at least) called Llaniestyn - one in Anglesey and 1 in Caernarfonshire

In 1881 there is a 5.5 acres smallholding farm called Llwyn y Gogau in Caernarfonshire. Hugh Williams age 57 lived there.

Can you post the 1841 family details please?

Best Wishes
Morgan

Perhaps I should have posted it as a lookup . The place is near Beaumaris, as that's the sub-district given. I'd never heard of the Anglesey Llaniestyn, I must admit.

The transcription I've got for 1841 says ' Beryny Gogal ' .

The habitants are : Evan Owen  ( 75 ) b Anglesey
Ellen Owen  (80)    born elsewhere (I know this is Llanddeiniolen)
                                John Owen  ( 50)  b Anglesey
                               Ellen Owen  (35)    b Anglesey
                                William Owen (35) b Anglesey
                                Ellen Owen (20)  b Anglesey
                                Margaret Owen (5) B Anglesey

                                Hugh Parry (15)  b Anglesey
Owen Rowlant (45) born elsewhere ( Nephew of the eldest Ellen Owen)
                                William Owen ( 25) b Anglesey
                                Ellen Owen (15) b Anglesey
Elizabeth Oliver (15) born elsewhere .

I'm sure the enumerator was glad he didn't have to write down the relationships in 1841 !
I'm guessing the older two would have passed on by 1851 .

I think the farm is called Bryn Cogail, which is on the road to Llanddona. The Grid Reference is SH5878
and there's a picture on Geograph site:

Thank you all very much. I remember my parents going there 30 odd years ago, but I always assumed that the area was Llanddona rather than another parish. I looked up 'Ancestry' for 1881 and found some other pieces of the jigsaw - I suspect the farm passed on to a son-in-law rather than a son.
I've got ' Find my past ' censuses up to 1901, but strangely enough, nothing comes up, even for 1881 .
I'm not sure that the parish is recognised . Do different websites use different transcriptions ?
I spent Monday at Penmon and Beaumaris , not far from Llaniestyn. Alas , fine weather and children ruled out any research !

Interested to know if you have connections with a Sara  or Sarah Owen from same area possibly - part of my tree - haven't found her on any census so far but keep looking

I think the spelling of the parishes is a problem for some websites. I'm related to the eldest Ellen Owen at Bryn Cogol (1841) . I know a sister married a Thomas Owen at Llanddona (not too far away ) .
Gwynedd Family History Society have MI's for both Llanddona and Llaniestyn ( I know the Llaniestyn one is on microfiche at the national library in Aberystwyth)

Do you have any further information on this lady ?

Hello Huw,

Try a search for "Bryn Cogail" on National Archives site. I found 3 occurences including:

Mortgage of a freehold farm and lands known as Bryn Cogail. Llaniestyn, for securing £1,500 in 1923, naming an Evan Owen.

and try "Bryncogail" on National Archives, found 1 item: a Memorandum of Recognizance  WQ/S/1866/E/90  1866 July 28 mentions an Ellin wife of William Jones.

Also see these old photographs from Llaniestyn on French site:

http://www.djibnet.com/photo/llaniestyn/

one is of an old grave of John Owen, Rhos Francis, Llaniestyn Parish died 1898 age 70.

Best Wishes
Morgan
