Margaret Marshall missing in Montrsoe Census
« on: Friday 04 June 10 02:57 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I am wondering if anyone would please be able to help me with the following mystery.

I have been trying to locate Margaret Julia Bingham Marshall, born 1873 in Montrose Angus and David Marshall b 1878 both to David Marshall (b 1846) and Catherine Marshall nee Bingham (b 1848).

I have the census returns for 1881 and 1891 which show that Margaret’s older siblings and one younger, were all residing with their paternal grandparents, George & Elizabeth Marshall at Mount Road Montrose, but no sign of Margaret or David.

Margaret’s siblings were: Rebecca, Elisabeth, Ann, Christina, Catherine (born between census returns and will not appear) and David.

I have never been able to trace David’s movements following his birth in 1878. I have ordered all death certificates that fitted his age etc but to no avail.

Margaret I have been able to trace from her marriage in 1899 in Govan, Lanark, the 1901 census, births of her children and then her death, so it is just these two census returns that escapes me.

The mother of the children, Catherine and the father David separated sometime after 1878 and Catherine goes on to have another child in 1881 with a Robert Smith, with whom she is living with on the 1881 census. These two children are not with her. I have not been able to trace the father David, in 1881 on any census returns. David later goes on to divorce Catherine in 1894 and remarry another woman in 1899.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this one has been puzzling me for a long time. A fresh set of eyes would probably do the trick!

Kind regards

Rachelle

have you looked at this possible death for david ?

as for margaret i cannot see her on my 1881 census discs
it does seem strange that she is not with her sisters in 1881  :-\

Hi Ev,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes Catherine the daughter, was born after the 1871 census and died a couple of months before the 1881 census.

I will try to find a matching death certifcate on Scotlands People, I have order 7 thus far and none have had the correct parents, Two were in 1880, one in 1878 etc.

Yes it is strange that Margaret seems to have just dissapeared from the census (as did her father mind you!) they are a bit of an elusive family!

Thanks I will see how I go on Scotland's Poeple for David Marshall and let you know!

Cheers

Rachelle

Thank you EV, that David Marshall was definately the correct one. Unfortunately it shows that David died aged 1 from Tabes Mesenterica, which is the same disease that his sister Catherine died from a year later.

Unfortunately that makes 5 children David and Catherine lost to TB. :(

Thank you, one mystery solved! I will check David;s burial when I have more credits on Deceased on Line.

Kind regards

Rachelle
