Marriage or death of Mary McKernan
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 00:49 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am hopping someone will be able to help me with the puzzle.  I am trying to find out what happened Mary McKernan

NAME : Mary McKernan

DATE OF BIRTH: 07/05/1877

BIRTHPLACE: Drumderg, Draperstown, Co Derry, Northern Ireland

FATHERS NAME : Patrick McKernan

MOTHERS NAME : Anne O'Neill

SIBLINGS: Annie, James, Sarah, Theresa, Patrick, John

ADDITIONAL INFO : I found her in the 1900 census in Brooklyn after that she disappears. I have been told that she was a nun but I can't find any record of that.   I did check other years of the census and can't find her.

I would be very grateful of any help you can give me as I am completing this research for an elderly aunt as she would be so happy if I could tell her what happened.

Thanks for all your help

Kieran

Hi Genealiza,

Thanks for your reply.  I did have a look at the website you suggested but didn't find anything that I thought could of been Mary.

Thanks for all your help

Were any of her siblings in the US?

It seems that it was common in the past for nuns to take on new names, so she may be listed in the census under another first name.

Hi Shellyesq,

Thanks for your reply.  I think I might have found her death but I am not sure how I can confirm that it is her.  I found Mary in the

1900 Brooklyn census and it is her as it states her date of birth.

McKiernan Mary 35 y July 3 1911 900 Richmond M265

Do you have any idea if this is her where she was likely to have been buried?

Yes Annie was in America she was I think married to O'Halloran and again I have found her and her family in the census but can't  find the marriage at all.

Thanks for all your help as I am really finding it hard to trace my America ancesters.

You would need to get the death certificate to find out if that was her.  Given the different spelling of the surname and a slightly different location, it's hard to be sure if it's your Mary.

However, you never know, so if you wish to check it out, here is information about ordering the certificate - http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vitalrecords/death.shtml

Another (possibly less expensive) alternative to ordering the certificate is going through the LDS Family History Library.  They have microfilm entitled "Richmond County, New York death certificates, 1898-1949".  If you live near a Family History Center, you could order the microfilm & check it yourself.  Or you can order the certificate to be photocopied for a minimum fee of $4, as explained here:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/08t6/

Hi Shellyesq,

Thanks for your reply.  Do you happen to know the microfilm no as I there is a LDS centre in London and they might have a copy.

For me to check I would have to know the film no.

Thanks for all your help, it is very much appreciated.

Hi Shellyesq,

I thought you might like to see this is maybe Mary's sister Annie O'Halloran nee McKernan

Name: Anna Ohalloran
Home in 1930: Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Age: 40
Estimated birth year: abt 1890
Birthplace: Northern Ireland
Relation to Head of House: Head (widow)
Race: White

Year of Immigration 1910

Anna Ohalloran 40
John J Ohalloran 10
Francis E Ohalloran 9
James T Ohalloran 7
Vincent L Ohalloran 5
Anna Miller 31
Myron Miller 9
Rodger Miller 8

However, I am now stuck with this as I don't know how I can verify if this is really her?

I would be very grateful of any help with this

It looks like the number for that portion of 1911 for death certificates in Richmond is numbered FHL US/CAN Film 1322806 Items 3 - 4.
