"Abbat", Cumberland
« on: Sunday 06 June 10 13:09 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone!

I have person I am interested in whose place of birth as given in the 1861 census is "Abbat, Cumberland".  Can anyone help me as to where this might be?

Thanks,

Lazytee

Hi Geoff!

The person I am interested in Jane Mitchelson, maiden name unknown, possibly Bell, who was the mother or possibly stepmother of Thomas Mitchelson, born 1799 in Simonburn, Northumberland.  In 1841 and 51 she was living with her son in Allendale, Northumberland.

Thanks for your interest.

Lazytee.

Hi

I've looked at that census and it's got me.

The only things I can think of, are, short of Abbeyholme,  or else Asby, if he got his *Double s" and "sb" mixed up.

I'll have another think.

Best wishes

Thank you Emms.  The only vague feeling I have is that it maybe a garbled form of Abbey, which could refer to "Abbey Lanercost", i.e. Lanercost Abbey in north Cumberland.  There were some Mitchelsons who came from that area.  Does this ring any bells?

Thank you for your kind interest.

Lazytee.

Hi Lazytee

Yes, of course now you mention it Lanercost could well be the place.  You might well have to search the other parishes nearby as it's such a rural area.  Lanercost would certainly be nearer Allendale.

As for ringing bells, I don't know this family, but with a name like Mitchelson it would be a likely area.

I'll have a root around though.

Best wishes

Hi Emms!

Thank you for taking all this trouble for me.  I do appreciate it.

Good luck with your ancestor hunting.

Cheers, Hazel.
