!861 census look-up, Sarah Hodgen
« on: Monday 14 June 10 01:34 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

If anyone can help to untangle a long standing problem, I'd appreciate your help.

In my Hodgson family there is Robert born c1828, and in the 1851 census I'm fairly sure he is shown as married to Hanah, who is actually Sarah but mistranscribed by the enumerator.

Everything points to him as marrying Sarah Hepplewhite in 1848 but in 1879 he marries in New Zealand claiming to be a bachelor.

In the 1861 census I have found on an Ancestry search that there is a Sarah Hodgen aged 32 with 11 year old William and 7 year old Benjamin, at Wingate.

Could anyone please provide the details of this family, and perhaps find any of them after this?

Regards,
Colin

Could you give a little more information out?  Where was Sarah born, where did you find them in the 1851 census?  Where is Robert in the 1861 census?
Is the 1851 census: HO107/2392 folio 245 page 54?

I don't know if you have the marriage but it was 21 Oct 1848, Kelloe St Helen , abode Cassop Colliery fathers:  William Hodgson and Ralph Hepplewhite

I have a relative who went off to Australia in the 1850's leaving behind a wife and daughter.  Later this wife remarries as a widow in the early 1860's.  I think--well James must have died in Australia.  A few years ago at a family name reunion a person from Australia is there and says she has one of my family's death certificate.--James and it was 10 years after the wife remarried as a widow.  And he was married but I couldn't read the name on the certificate or find his marriage.

Hi Colin

Is your Robert  the same Robert HODGSON, being discussed here by another researcher:

http://www.hodgson-clan.net/p5.htm

"....searching for missing links in my Hodgson Tree. Richard Reed Hodgson was born in 1748 in Durham. He married Elizabeth Middleton in Chester-le-Street. He later married Ann Stafford. I am seeking information on Richard’s Parents. I understand his Father was probably Thomas Hodgson. My grandfather Robert Hodgson was born August 1828 in County Durham, England. He emigrated to the Ballarat Gold Fields in Victoria, Australia and settled in Otago, New Zealand in the Gold Rush around 1861-64. He died in Cardrona, N.Z. on 16 Dec 1893, leaving a widow with 11 children, one being my Mother Alice, a twin, then aged 2 months old. Robert’s Parents were William Hodgson born 1792 in Morpeth and Ann Embleton born 17 March 1790. Robert had seven siblings: Mary, Richard, Maryann, Edward, Benjamin, Sarah and Elizabeth.........."

The only NZ marriage I can see is one in 1878, to a Bridget GALLAGHER?

Benjamin, Elizabeth and one named Margaret were baptised in Chester le Street.

Benjamin (Robert's brother) was buried Monk Hesleden St Mary's, age 21, 29 July 1852

Ann (the mother)was a widow in the 1841 census HO107/313/10 folio 44 page 1  Kelloe

There is a baptism in the Primitive Methodist records for Benjamin Embleton Hodgson s/o Robert and Sarah, miner, Castle Eden 24 Jan 1854.  nost likely named after Robert's recently departed brother Benjamin

Sarah's parents were Ralph Hepplewhite and Isabel Crozier

Wow, what a response. Thank you all so much.

Karenlee, thanks for the quick reponse with the 1861 details which seems to confirm that Robert left his family behind, presumably to join him later.

Ambly, the link to the other Hodgson enquiry does indeed refer to the same Robert and I have been in contact with Maryanne for several years. The marriage and census details for William certainly look promising, thanks very much.

Janis, thanks to you also for the details which you found, although I had most of them they were a difficult family to crack. You mentioned that there were 3 baptisms at Chester le Street, Benjamin, Elizabeth and Margaret. I don't have any details on Margaret, do you happen to have any more information? Her parents should be William and Ann. He was a seaman but had a short spell as a miner.

Thanks again, it is very much appreciated,
Colin

In Chester le Street baptisms Margaret 29 Jan 1815 d/o William and Ann Hodgson of Chester, Husbandman?  sort of sloppy writing.

Elizabeth baptised 7 July 1833 d/o William and Ann Hodgson, Houghton Gate, Pitman

Benjamin baptised 10 Apr 1830 s/o William and Ann Hodgson, Old Lambton, Seaman

Where were the middle of the bunch baptised?
