Abblitt - 1892 - Liverpool to New York - Please
« on: Monday 14 June 10 23:26 BST (UK) »
Hello,

A first cousin 4x removed of mine Susannah Stevens married Tom Abblitt in Mar Quarter of 1892 in Huntingdonshire. Both were born in Ramsey and are there with six children in 1901.

Imagine my suprise when I see that the two eldest Sarah and George (born 1893 and 1894) were born in Nebraska, USA!!!

Sure enough a quick free search on findmypast and there is Tom and Susannah departing from Liverpool in the same year of their marriage, bound for New York. No doubt then onto Nebraska.

The third eldest child Mildred was born in Ramsey in 1896, so would be my guess the family were back in Huntingdonshire no later then four years after their departure.

Can anyone with a findmypast subscription please tell me what else is in the record?

Also is this brief stint abroad common? - Is it just a case of the family unable to make the move work, so they come back to what they know?

Thanks

Jonathan

Hi

They left England on the 9th March 1892. If you look on the Ellis Island site he is down as Thomas Abbett, she is just Mrs Abbett. They arrived in New York on 17th March on board the City of New York, he was 24, she was 25.

Hi,

Thanks, thats great.

Ha, two and a half years. Maybe we'll never know why their American move didn't work.

Notice that they married in the Mar Quarter of 1892 and by the 9th of March they were off to America. Matter of weeks or even days from marriage to leaving. Running away from something or just keen to start anew somewhere far away as man and wife?

Thanks again

A marriage reg in Mar qtr 1892 could have taken place anytime between Mid Dec 1891- end mar 1892

it does look as if their intention was to marry and sail away into the sunset

there could have been several reasons why they went (and came back) - maybe farming wasn't as good as at home? maybe they were just plain homesick?
Maybe they joined the LDS Church and it didn't work out??? We can only guess
