Machynlleth etc., MONMOUTHSHIRE on Ancestry!!!!
« on: Tuesday 29 March 05 01:06 BST (UK) »
As you all probably know, the 1901 Census for Wales is now on ancestry.co.uk.

When the 1901 Census was first published on the Internet by the PRO, there were a lot of complaints about the standard of the index - especially with regard to the spelling of Welsh place names.

Ancestry has taken and adapted the PRO index for its offering, and has succeeded to make a bad job worse.  >:(

Every entry where the PRO transcribers had worked out that the county in the "where born" column was written as "Mont" have been automatically changed to "Monmouthshire" by Ancestry! :'(

So if you are unsure if your ancestor was born in Machynlleth or Darowen, Newtown or Welshpool don't just rely on looking for John Jones born in the county of Montgomeryshire - try Monmouthshire too!!! ???

There are "only" 370 people "born in Monmouthshire" and living in "Montgomeryshire (one of them was born in Sirhowy - so is probably correct) but compare the number of people in bordering parishes born in Monmouthshire:

209 in Talyllyn
92 In Mallwyd
14 in Llanymawddwy - OK 14 in Llanymawddwy might not sound like much but it is still 3% of the village! :(
