Castle Yard Lower (Royal Exchange, Dublin)
« on: Tuesday 15 June 10 17:40 BST (UK) »
Castle Yard Lower is mentioned in the 1911 census.  Can anyone tell me exactly what and where it was?

Cheers

Castle yard was near Dame street (off Palace street)

Thom's 1904 lists Castle yard (upper & lower) as between Palace Street and Gt. Ship St, so just beside Dublin Castle. I've marked the location I believe may fit on the map extract below..

see 1904 street index at : http://roots.swilson.info/1904page2.html

and the full 1912 map at : http://roots.swilson.info/dublin1912/dublin1912.html

Hi

Thanks for such a fast reply.   Do you reckon the yard was actually part of Dublin Castle and what would it have been used for?   Were there people housed "within" the yard?

Cheers

Jut looking at the details in Thom's '04 I wonder if Castle Yard, may refer to part of Dublin Castle itself..

The occupants listed in Thom's 1904 are all Military in the lower yard, and government offices in the upper yard.

I imagine it may be part of the Castle, but am not certain.    Does Thoms 1904 list the names of inhabitants?

Cheers

seeing the residents in Thom's I'm not so sure about my first answer now..

it looks like the lower yard may be the section I've marked in red, and the upper yard the section in green ?

The street in blue is unlabeled - but Place street might fit..

I'll see if I can find more details...

In the lower yard Thom's lists a few names and offices - mostly military as far as I can see.. so looks like it could be part of the castle

I'll see if I can scan the page

All appears to be part of Dublin castle - see attached Castle Yard lower and upper from Thom's 1904.  See the notation to the left of both entries 'The Castle'
