Just to get back to your original question , there is a Millar Nicol on the 1851 census.

Search criteria on S.P.   age 56 , Abbey Parish , Renfrewshire. I know the age is slightly out, but I'd say it's definately worth a look. I don't have the cert, just did a search on S.P. to see if I got any hits.. I originally used wider parameters then narrowed it down.  ;)

Only by looking at cert. will you know if he's yours.  The age has possibly been mistranscribed, or whoever gave the info did not know his age-(possibly didn't know his real age himself )

Hi Tootsiepie, I realize I am several years late to the party, but I have only recently come across this. I am also descended from Millar Nicol and would greatly appreciate a copy of his death certificate, and the deaths/marriages of his sons if you still have them as images. Thanks!

Hi mcjames
Welcome to Rootschat and the Millar Nicol family!
Your post prompted me to go back and see if I had got any further with Millar - but unfortunately not. His father was Walter Nicol, and his mother Helen Miller. There doesn't seem to be any marriage for them on Scotlands People or Familysearch.
There are several Walter Nicol's in the 1841 Census - but haven't been able to definitely pin one down to 'ours'

Which child of Millar do you descend from? I have found 9 children of Walter and Margaret Robertson.

If you don't hear from tootsiepie (I'm sure you will), I can look out the info I have - a little difficult just this minute as I'm away from home - visiting Scotland in a couple of weeks! Hooray!

Happy hunting!

Hi McJames,  I still have the certs and will send them later on today, if you send me your E-mail address by PM.

To send a PM, you will first have to make 3 posts, so reply to this and that should be fine.

Hi Goldie, was just checking there to see if you still popped and lo and behold :).  If I've not asked before , can I enquire about your Cochran connection? Absolutely no rush for info as I see you are away from home.

Funnily enough I keep going back to my Nicol line and to recheck I am on the right family  ::)

Hope the Scottish weather improves for when you come in a couple of weeks.

Hi Tootsiepie
Good to hear from you again.

As I got out my records to reply to mcjames, and I'm still sat at the computer! no probs about the Cochrans.

Millar Nicol had a  granddaughter Margaret  (her father was James who married an Elizabeth Paton - now there's a family who are one of my brick walls!).
Margaret married James Cochran 14 June 1878 at Paisley. James Cochran was my great grandfather, and in fact my mother still had Nicol as one of her names. And I called my daughter Nicola - funny how these things carry on.
James Cochran's father was Michael Cochran, as were the next two generations back - they were handloom weavers from Darvel, Ayrshire originally. Michael (the middle one of the three Michaels), was the one to move his family to the 'big city' of Paisley about 1830.

Don't know if this ties in with your Cochrans (still sometimes written Cochrane in registers), and I have JUST come across the obit for my grandmother who died in 1939, and everyone was shocked to see the name spelt Cochrane with an 'e'!

My visit to Scotland is mostly to look round the Cochran roots in Ayrshire and Paisley.
Cheers
Goldie ;)

hi again :)

I have a Mary Cochran married to William Nicol 1830 Abbey (Paisley) and my line comes from their son John.  The Cochran name was given as middle names to later children too.   Her parents were named from her death cert as John Cochran and Mary Buman (Bowman) m. 1796 Abbey.

The other Cochran I have is  Archibald Nicol (Nikol) married to Agnes Cochran 1795 Abbey .

All Cochrans with and without 'e's at various times :)

I will try and look at these lines again tonight when I get McJames certs ready.

''Thought''  As you are a line of Mcjames family do you want to send stuff or will I ?
