Hi Richard

Are you looking for records of his life/background in Ayrshire - or his immigration record - or both?

Immigration: links
http://www.coraweb.com.au/shipindex.htm

1841 UK CENSUS (sometimes other also years)
http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

IGI
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

There are also pay sites:
Ancestry (or perhaps  free access thru and at  a local library)
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/

Scotlands People - BDM, Parish records, census, wills
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

The value of of these sites to you may depend on when he immigrated.

If you want  help to get a start - just post the details of what you already know of Peter - and I'm sure you'll get get lots of replies !

Cheers

Thanks for all that Ambly.  I'll work my way through it.  I'm really looking for all of the above, his birth in 1823, place of birth, parents and immigration record.  I'm slowly learning to use Scotlands People and will take your advice and make another posting next week.

regards

Hello listers

I'm searching for a Peter Hawkins who was born in Ayreshire c. 1823 and emigrated to Australia later on.  Peter married Susan Jones in Bathurst NSW, in 1849, and they had 8 children.  I haven't been able to find death details for Peter.  Searching on ScotlandsPeople, I haven't been able to find birth details either! - but using Soundex, I found a Peter Higgins who was born in Stirling in 1824 and one born in Lanarck in 1827, with parents John and Margaret.  Using NSW BDM, I found a Peter Higgins who died in Sydney in 1887, with these parents.  1886/7 is the last mention of Peter Hawkins in the electoral rolls.  This is a long shot, but I'm really having trouble with this one.  Maybe he was born in another shire, sometime around 1823?  Any help appreciated (thanks to Ambly for your help already.)

Peter was my great great grandfather, and the only branch of my tree left to complete.  He worked as a carpenter.  I've found all I know of him from family certificates.  I search many of the regular sites on a regular basis.

Best wishes

Hi Richard

It might be worth looking for Patrick as well as Peter as these were often used interchangeably in Scotland.  This family, in the 1841, caught my eye:

Main Street, Gorbals, Glasgow, Lanarkshire

Harkins
Roseann, 35, Cotton HLW, b. Ireland
John, 20, Cotton dyer
Patrick, 18, Cotton dyer
Roseann, 15
Mary, 10

All but Roseann, snr, b. Lanarkshire

There isn't an exact match for him on the 1851 so he might be yours.

Thanks Gadget, I'll follow up any leads.  The date of birth and shire work out right.  I'll check for Patrick on ScotlandsPeople.

Best wishes

Hello

I have posted this query before, but have found new shipping details and am posting again in case there is any new information available.

I am searching for birth and death records for Peter Hawkins.  He was born in Ayr in 1823 and was a carpenter.  He worked his passage to New South Wales aboard the Princess Royal, a cargo ship that left Liverpool, England on 22.1.1845 and arrived in Sydney on 7.7.1845.  Peter married Susan Jones in a Presbyterian ceremony in Bathurst in 1849 and had 10 children, the last of whom was born in 1864.  He may have died after the 1860s.

Because I don't have a birth or death record I don't know who his parents were or anything more about his birth.  Is there any Scottish information that might help?

Many thanks for the replies people have sent in the past.

Hi,

I don't know what info you've been given in the past as I'm relatively new to this board but....
can I ask where you found Peter's place of birth as Ayr?
Hawkins is not a very common name in Scotland , especially around this time 1820's- 1840's.
In fact according to Scotlands People's website there are only 123 people with that name on the 1841 Scottish Census . The highest number - 50 -are in Lanarkshire. There are no Hawkins in Ayrshire :( on the 1841 Census.
That is not to say that Peter wasn't born there! And, of course he and his family could have moved on out of Ayrshire before the Census was taken.

Sometimes children's names can give clues to grandparents. Do you have a list of Peter and Susan's family?
I'll have a little browse this afternoon for you.
Looby
