I think it's Craigielands Village which is not far from Moffat  (just by Beattock) :)

Hope I can offer a way out of Hugh's confusion.
Moffat and Kirkpatrick Juxta are two adjoining Dumfriesshire parishes.  The village which was once called Craigielands no longer exists -- it is now one big caravan site on the estate of the same name.
The village next to Kirkpatrick Juxta is called Beattock -- so named after the hill made famous in the railway age.  A spare engine had to be permanently located their to help hall goods trains going north during their ascent to Beattock Summit.
Cheers,
Sy

The only Rascarrel I know of is in Kirkcudbrightshire in the parish of Rerrick which lies on the Solway coast between Dalbeattie and Kirkcudbright.

Removal of Crawford Map map clips by Copyright Editor.
I would have liked to have been offered a reason why this was done.
I'm the volunteer members of Dumfries & Galloway Family History Society who has overall management of their digital records. The map in question was donated to the Society by a member.  I was instrumental in arranging that DGFHS placed it with Ewart Library on permanent loan so that it could be made available more widely to researchers (any copyright issues if there is such a thing with an 1828 map they all resides with DGFHS).  We have a digital copy in our Research Centre in Dumfries and I have personally given prints of digital clips to many visitors over the five years we have owned this map it.
If anyone on this list is interested in a particular Dumfriesshire parish and would like a clip for non-commercial use in their family history record please send me a personal message by clicking the scroll below my name on the left of this screen.  Since it seems to ne inappropriate to include digital clips on this forum you will have to send me an emal address which accepts attachments.
Cheers,
Sy
PS the globe icon also shown left will take you to my photo tour website of photos I have taken in 65 of Dumfries and Galloway graveyards.

<<My grandfather Hugh Little was born in 1880 but in the Census for 1901 is shows he was at Rascarrel Farm/Cottages and was 21 but born in Moffatt, his birth certificate shows Kirkpatrick
Juxta - County of Dumfries - confused ! >>

Today I checked the 1901 Census for Kirkpatrick Juxta in the DGFHS archive, here is the result.
Registration District 838 Kirkpatick Juxta, Dumfriesshire
Enumeration District 3 page 9
Residence: Hillside Cottage
Hugh LITTLE, Head, age 34  Coachman (Domestic), born Kirkpatick Juxta
Margaret LITTLE, wife, age 29, born Moffat
[maiden name PORTEOUS  see info on Brother in Law below]
Agnes LITTLE, daughter age 6, Scholar, born Kirpatrick Juxta
Lancelot LITTLE, son, age 4, born Kirkpatrick Juxta
William LITTLE, son, age 2, born Kirkpatrick Juxta
Samuel PORTEOUS, brother in Law, age 13, Scholar, born Kirkpatrick Juxta
John ROSS, Boarder, age 20, Railway Engine Fireman, born Applegarth

Note the differences:
This Hugh LITTLE was born in 1867 not 1880.
Your grandfather, born 1880, in Rascarrel Cottages in 1901, is likely to be from a different LITTLE family.
As I said already the only Rascarrel in Dumfries & Galloway is located in Rerrick parish Kirkcudbrightshire, not Dumfriesshire
I'm due back in the DGFHS Research Centre next Saturday.
If it would help I could check the DGFHS archive for 1901 census data for Rerrick parish.
Cheers,
Sy

Hi both

I'm confused by Sandy's last message. I thought that we were talking about a Hugh Little b. 1880 K-J not someone b. 1867, K-J.

The inclusion of a totally different transcript from 1901 is a total red herring.  David hasn't mentioned this family at all.

The really important question is ~

Is the Hugh Little born 1880  in Kirkpatrick Juxta - and who's birth cert  we were looking at - David's ancestor.

The 1880 birth cert  definitely says b. Craigielands Village, Kirkpatrick Juxta

Risk of thunderstorm here so will add this before switching off

For clarification ~

In 1901, the person that David was referring to is here in the household of John Bell:

Rascarrel Farm, Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire
879 ED 3 Page 14

...
Hugh Little, 21, farm servant, b. Moffat
Thomas Little, 19, farm servant, b. Moffat
...

In 1891, the family are here:

Holmend, Moffat
842 ED 6 P38

Little
Marion, 27, labourer's wife, b. Moffat
Hugh, son, 11
Thomas, son, 9
Robert, son, 8
Robert Borrowman, lodger, 36, Labourer - general , b. Moffat

Others b. Kirkpatrick- Juxta

David asked a question which I think was answered in  replies #1-10  I'm really unclear why Sy has posted here  :-\
