1890s Arklow Parish records. Michael Fitzgerald
« on: Monday 21 June 10 20:31 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am researching my Irish side of my family and are finding the more recent people rather difficult.

I need to locate the marriage/census record for Michael Fitzgerald who is my Great Great Grandfather.  I really need to confirm the name of the person he married and possibly where and when.  Also, who his parents were if poss?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Andrew.

What's your starting point.. do you have year of birth for Michael or details of any of his children ?

Probably the place to start is with Civil BMD records - see : Introduction to Irish Records

There are some Wicklow parish records online on a pay-site at the moment but just baptisms and no marriages

Welcome to Rootschat. Difficult to give exact answers without any idea of dates. Since you've posted this on the Wicklow board it looks like you know at least the county where your family lived.

First complete census for Ireland is 1901- it and 1911 are online (free):
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Irish marriage certificates should list fathers' names and occupations but mothers' names are not included. Registration of Catholic marriages began 1864 (from 1845 for non-Catholic marriages).

Hi Shane,

He was born in 1890 and he had sons called Michael,  Joseph and James and  a daughter called Mary.

Thanks for getting back to me so fast.

Andrew

do you have years of birth for the children (even approximate) ?

Fitzgerald is quite a common surname in Co. Wicklow and Arklow ... so any additional clues will help your search.

Do you have any idea other details on Michael ? e.g. street or part of the town they lived, his occupation, his wife's first name etc..

I don't have the birth years a for the children  but I think they lived on South Quay.  I think He was a sailor(unsure) and his wife's first name could be Catherine.

That's about all I know.  Michael's son Michael was born in 1915 (i think)

Have you seen this family on the 1911 census - Fitzgerald family - South Quay Arklow

Includes a Michael of the right age at the location you mention except he's a Tailor ... rather than Sailor

The S is scholar is very much like the first letter of the occupation of Michael and his brother and could be Sailor.

thanks aghadowey... I neglected to check the actual form

It's definitely an S , his T's are different - see the T in Thomas

so Sailor after all... even better match to the clues
