A Prosecution was instituted against a number of men from the Clonegal district. The offence alleged against them was that they assembled on 17th September at Clonegal and tendered the United Irish oath to Nicholas Tomkins who appeared to give evidence against them.
Their names were John Mahon, John Evans, Denis Doyle, Denis Beahon, John Kenny, John & Bryan Short, Thomas & William Clarke, James Doyle, Richard Quinton, Thomas Connors and John Keegan.
They were put back for trial to the next assizes. Some of them were 'out' but others appeared and were given bail. among the sureties were Mogue Mahon and John Geehan of Drumderry, Philip Kennedy of Kildavin, Michael Nolan of Ballypierce, Michael Clarke, Johnstown, Matthew Byrne, Kildavin, Michael Kennedy Carlow, Michael Nolan Ballypierce, and Thomas Askins Kildavin.
Prisoners were also charged with assualting Nicholas Tomkins, but this charge was also adjourned.
Silvester Cavanagh (or Tobin), prosecuted as a vagabond by John Butler, was ordered to be detained in custody until he gave bail, himself in £400 and two other sureties in £200, to be of the peace for seven years.
Patrick Keegan and Denis Keegan were prosecuted as vagabonds by John De Renzy. They were ordered to give bail in the same amount and Timothy Hickey of Clonogan and Walter Magee of Old Grange, farmers, entered into security on their behalf.
