How about this one (transcribed as Paulson)

George 'Paulson', 40
Marian, 35
Johanna, 11
Elizth, 10
Marina, 7
Anne, 6
Ellen, 5
Louisa, 4
Eliza, 2
Samuel, 1 Month

at Jordan St, Liverpool St Thomas. George is a tobacconist. All born in county except mother Marian.

Hope that helps
 :) Barbara

Hi,thankyou for your reply, not sure as have no other clues to help me here.
Spellings of Poulson I know can be different like a lot of names.
I have seen an Ellen Poulson c1836 spelt the right way on an 1841 census search but havn't got acsess to the actual records without paying fees.
She was the only Ellen Poulson out of 8 that was in Liverpool/Lancashire/ of the right age.
I did suspect George Poulson to be her father and possibly Ellen Pickavance to be her mother but this is only guess work as her name was Ellen and I did find some records that could have suited.
Also found a record that said George father and Mary Ann mother,so I really don't know??Mind you could Mary ann be Marian?
Can't find her birth record as she was before freebmd.
I have seen a tobbaconist on another tree recently but now I forget who's it was.
Wish I was younger,to remember things would be good. ::)
Just noticed the record that I can't view 1841 census is in Liverpool st Thomas ,so looks like this could be correct .
Is St Thomas the district??

Hi there,

I found her first in 1861 in Newcastle (born Liverpool, married Newcastle, so it looked like your Ellen). at that time she was unmarried and living with her married sister Louise Weddell, and there was another sister Eliza Poulson with them as well.
So in the 1841 I looked for a family group with those sisters together, and this one in Jordan St was there. The actual image could easily be read as Poulson or Paulson.

There are some baptisms for this family on Lancashire OPC, this might be where you have seen George's wives names  :D
There is this one:
"25 Aug 1844 St Peter, Liverpool
George Poulson - Child of George Poulson & Mary Ann
Abode: Jordan St
Occupation: Tobacconist"
so I would say yes, Mary Ann and Marian the same person. Interestingly the same child was also baptised in Preston three weeks earlier, again according to Lancs OPC
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

do have a look at this site, you should find several relevant entries. Go to the Search page then click where it says 'you may click here to search the whole county'. Just do a search on the surname Poulson. It does look as if George was married twice, to Ellen then Mary Ann/Marian.

Good luck
 :) Barbara

Thankyou Barbara.
Do you think George may have been married to Ellen Pickavance and then a Mary Ann(Marian) after?
Just wondering if I was almost right with my assumptions.
I did look at this site but couldn't work things out like you have.
Thanks again,much appriciated.
Moira :)
I have looked at the site that you have link to and a little bit complicated for me to work out but looks like there is an Alice born to George and Ellen and a George born to them.
Then I think Ellen dies and there is a burial record and also a burial record for George her son.
I can't find any others apart from George born c1844 later to George and Mary Ann.
Can't find any references to the family in 1841 census children wise, that would be so if George was born 1844 and Alice was old enough to have left home .
Why can I not find any references to other children born including Ellen?
Is it because these are not complete records?
Found Eliza june qtr 1839 freebmd and Samuel june qtr 1841.George sept qtr 1844 Preston free bmd.
Getting there eventually. :P

Hi Moira,

The Lancashire OPC records aren't complete, they are transcribed by volunteers, same as the Free BMDs, so the site gets more added every week. I've started doing some transcribing for them myself, there are about 400 people working on Lancashire records from across the county.

I think its a very good bet that George married Ellen then Mary Ann, especially as there is a burial for an Ellen that fits. I take it you have seen the baptism of 'Eleanor' Poulson in 1836, parents George and Mary Ann (on Family Search)?

There is this marriage on the new Family Search Pilot site which looks like yours:
10 March 1863, St Nicholas Newcastle
Ellen Poulson to George Askwith Dobson
Brides father George Poulson
Grooms father William Henry Dobson

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home

To be absolutely certain, you could ask for a lookup of the marriage register on the Northumberland Rootschat board, to see if this George Poulson is a tobacconist. If so, I think you have the right family.

Hi,

George`s birth registration is also on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk for Preston.  It shows his mothers maiden name was Hughes.  The 1851 census also confirms that he was born Preston.

There is a marriage for a George Poulson and Mary Ann Hughes at St. Nicholas, Liverpool on 5th October, 1828.

You do need the marriage certificate of Ellen to be sure though.

Regards,
Mo

Thankyou both for you input.I have checked today and found most of the info you have found.
The marriage to Ellen Poulson is mine to George Askwith Dobson,I know that for fact as my Dobsons up until my cousin used Askwith/Asquith as a middle name.
It's good to see that I have been on the right track with most of my research.
I have filled in quite a few blanks today so I'm well pleased. :D
Couldn't have done it without your help though,so well done. 8)

Have only just joined Rootschat so am not familiar with the process.

Saw your info about Poulson family.  Have been researching this family for years and have a great deal of info. about them which I am happy to share.  I am descended from George Poulson via his daughter by 2nd marriage, Joanna, who married John H James a mariner.   Their daughter Ellen Louisa James was my gt. grandmother - she married a Thompson in Manchester.  George married a third time after Mary Ann (Marian) and died in Wales at Amlych.
