McGuinness Or McGinnis
« on: Tuesday 22 June 10 20:29 BST (UK) »
I have a mother with the maiden name spelt McGinnis on an 1848 Liverpool birth certificate. The people came from County Cavan would it have been spelt in Cavan as McGuinness or McGinnis?

Maginnis/McGinnis/McGuinness/ McGuiness would certainly be very possible...

Spellings were "interpreted"  by the person writing down the record, the people involved may have actually left the building before the person actually wrote down the record. Often, it wasn't the priest/minister who kept the records but a member of the church.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

My Bridget McGinnis married Michael Brady around the 1820s in Cavan. This Brady family probably settled in Liverpool in the 1840s. Their first child to be born in Liverpool was in 1848.
