"Ex-National" Schools?
« on: Wednesday 23 June 10 11:07 BST (UK) »
I've seen a lot of references in the Irish censuses for 1901 and 1911 to Ex National School Teachers.

Having looked for other references in newspapers I've come to the conclusion that these people are not ex-teachers at National Schools,  but are teachers at Ex-National Schools. I've even found a reference to an inspector of Ex-National Schools. Can anyone tell me more about Ex National Schools?

I just had a quick look at a few entries........

One household-3 ex Nat. School teachers ..all aged over 60
1 -29 year old Nat. School teacher.

Could the "ex" come from "ex gratia?"

Perhaps a lot of the teaching came from "voluntary" work from within the Church?

More questions than answers but that's my in put.

Regards.

I was intrigued by your message and looked at the 1911 census and found a large number of Ex- National School teachers. But I would understand this to mean retired or former National School teacher. I am nearly certain that there were not any Ex-National Schools as such. Also found an Ex- Excise officer - again I read this as retired or former excise officer.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm coming round to the view that my original conclusion was quite wrong! I had found a newspaper report of a school in Belfast having been visited by an Ex National School Inspector who had reported favourably, but that was an industrial school and the visit may have been a private one.
