Can anyone read this place name in Ireland please
« on: Monday 28 June 10 23:46 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone tell me what this place name is.  Looks like Bacon Tabor but nothing comes up when I google it, although Tabor seems something to do with Co Cork??

Thank you
Joan

Think it's part of the occupation (bacon _? or B_ laborer) and that the place is merely 'Ireland.'

Hi

I think I may have solved it.  There is a Bekan in Co Mayo ???  I suppose a strong accent could have sounded like Bacon ???

Does anyone else on the page born in Ireland have more details? (I see another 'Ireland' on the fragment) Still think it's part of the occupation (occupation box says 'Laborer' but perhaps enumerator put in more detail and then wrote 'Ireland.' If It was a place name the county would probably have been written as well.

Hi

Not as clear, but you can see, on some they have written  Ireland than place on others place then Ireland.

It does look like Baron Tober ... but how about a mis-hearing of Ballintubber, which is about 14km south of Castlebar in Co. Mayo ?

It certainly looks like "Baron" - short for "Baronry", perhaps?

Under Roscommon in the Wikipedia list of Irish baronies there are North and South "Ballintober": could this possibly be what was meant?

Rachel
Stevens (Devizes, Calne, Wootton Bassett): Hunt (Milford/Lymington, Calne): Moore/Rudland (Ipswich): Whitlock (Pitton & Farley): Hayter (Whiteparish)

O'Reilly (Sheffield, Flint, L'pool, Co. Longford): Foxton (Sheffield, Northallerton, Thirsk): Spragg (St. Teath, Delabole, Pengelly): Stabb (Berry Pomeroy)

Gore (Newbury, Wigan): Hawkins (Gt Bedwyn/Hungerford): Massey/Wallis (Shalbourne): Mildenhall (Ogbourne): Smith/Lilley (Nhants): Wernham (Chieveley): Woosnam (Mont./Salop): Yaldwyn (Blackdown)

Hello and thank you everyone for your input.

Ballintober sounds good to me too Rachel,  there was mention of Roscommon in the family way back - so it fit's quite nicely  ;D

Thank you once again
Joan
