Reigate Foreign
« on: Tuesday 29 June 10 04:04 BST (UK) »
Someone please enlighten me  ???

I thought Reigate Foreign was the poorhouse? yet I seem to have members of my family that have bought whole families up there and have been there for years, and even generations! I though children born to workers were taken away?

Also on several census forms they have addresses i.e 23 brook lane, reigate foreign.

Could someone please throw some light on this as I am confused.

Many thanks

Reigate Foreign seems to have been some villages outside the borough of Reigate, see:-

"Within the manor but outside the borough".

I'm also tracing the Walls family and my gt gt uncle Thomas Walls born east Grinstead, and his family lived in Reigate Foreign. If anyone else has any information on Thomas Walls please contact me Via this site. My understanding is that there was a workhouse in Reigate foreign but it was also an area in the outside of the town. I think the workhouse is now a pub!
