Seeking information re Ellen AVINGDON
« on: Wednesday 30 June 10 01:30 BST (UK) »
Ellen Avingdon, believed originally from Cornwall but not confirmed. Born about 1806 or 1807. Married a Richard Clarke or  may be listed as Clark (without the 'e'). Originally thought Richard was born in England about 1811 or 1812, but maybe he wasn't....... was he a convict sent to Tasmania, or was he born in Tasmania? There are certainly several convicts with this name. Marriage between Richard Clarke and Ellen Avingdon believed in Tasmania, Australia, but moved to Amherst, Victoria, Australia at some stage. Daughter Agnes born at Amherst 3 Oct 1856. Agnes married John Thomas Le Tisser 18 Nov 1880 (approx)

Hi Doss,

I do not know this name at all. It does not sound Cornish. I can find no-one with this name at all. Not just Cornwall but the entire IGI for UK does not have a single recordof the name AVINGDON. I suspect this has to be a poor transcription of Ellen's name. I am going to send your request to the Australia Board where I hope some information on Ellen may come to light thus allowing you to progress with this.  ;D

Cheers Kris  :)

Sincere thank you to all those who have contributed to this response. One family member had always thought Ellen's name was incorrectly transcribed. The Helen mentioned by Raylen has also solved another mystery - I can now see she was actually called 'Nellie' by the family and she died at the age of 17. It is all starting to fit.
Now
All I need is the past background of Richard Clark (e) and Ellen Abbington. I will search, but would love some additional help if possible. When and how they came to Hobart.... and where from?

There is this death in Victoria

1888 #16688
Richard CLARKE, 76
Death Place:   Amherst, Victoria
Father's Name:   Richard
Mother's Name:   Amherst
Estimated Birth Year:   abt 1812

Tasmania Colonial Family site gives Richard CLARK's date of birth as 1812; fits also with his age at marriage.

The death certificate should give some particulrs re his parents etc but that would depend on the accuracy of the informant, who may know little of his early life.

DYER - Wilts, London, Somerset, MIDLANE - Hants, Wilts, SONE - Hants, WRIGHT - London, Hants, SEAGER - Deptford, DWYER, FERGUSON - Victoria, MASON - Woodford Vic, BALLARD - South Wales, GOULDBY - Lowestoft
