Armour Family of Mauchline
« on: Wednesday 30 June 10 20:55 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am researching the following family, who lived all over Scotland, spending most of their time in Kilmarnck:

James Robertson, b. 1776-86, d. 1841-1856, possibly born in Midlothian
Mary Armour, b. c. 1780 - d. bef. 1856
- Married in Kilmarnock in 1799

I have found a possible baptism for Mary Armour, 28 February 1779, in Mauchline

But I don't have evidence to prove this is the correct baptism. The parents are James Armour & Mary Smith, whose other daughter Jean Armour married the poet Robert Burns. I have heard of a Armour family bible for this family dating back to c. 1760, but can't find where it might be located. Does anyone know anything of this bible? Or any other suggestions for researching this family?

Hi David

There is this snippet regarding the Armour Family Bible:

The Armour Family Bible, which contains the record of the marriage of James Armour and Mary Smith, 7th December 1761, and the register of the birth of their children, is in the Burns house, Mauchline. The imprint on the title page is: 'Edinburgh, printed by Adrian Watkins, 1756'.

Is there a connection between James Armour and Mary Smith you mention?

Hi Monica.

Jean had a brother named James and a father with the same name.  The father married Mary Smith which would make her the mother of brother James.

Thanks.  My sister and I have just started this journey.  She's doing well, I keep getting stuck on the stories.  They're interesting lol.
