1881 Census "Swensty Guard N.." Little Family
« on: Thursday 01 July 10 09:25 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
Mary Little, widow, and her children Margaret (21), Betsy (19), and Sarah (14), are listed as living at dwelling "Swensty Guard N.." , Holme Abbey.

Can some one tell me what the dwelling address is?

I have this information from the "familysearch.org" website.

Thank You
Jean

I don't think it applies to the LITTLEs at all, just the households at the top of that page and the bottom of the previous page.

Perhaps Guards Hill or Guards Mills. (or Villa even)

There is no dwelling address for the LITTLEs, only Swinsty.

Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Hello Geoff-E,

I was hoping to pin the place on a Google map, but perhaps I was aiming too high.

Thank you for the response.

... as I said, the LITTLEs were not at that address.  One of the people who was there was a railway employee (as was his neighbour).  The station was here http://tinyurl.com/37vrq7n

Sorry Geoff-E,

I do not understand what you trying to say to me.
You say "at the top of that page and the bottom of the previous page".
What Page? Where are you seeing this?

Both the IGI and Findmypast say that the address/dwelling of Mary Little and her 3 daughters is Swensty Guard N.., and the census place is Holme Abbey (IGI), or Abbey Holme (Findmypast).

I will go to a library where I can access Ancestry and see if I can find a copy of the original.  And, failing that, will order the film from the Latter Day Saints.

I do appreciate your input, but I do not think we are understanding each other.

I actually think I will be happy that they resided somewhere in Swensty/Swinsty. :)

See

Unfortunately, the person who stuck the flag in for Holme Abbey put it in the wrong place.   >:( The abbey is at the east of Abbey Town.  http://tinyurl.com/3x2holp

South of Abbey Town (on Google Maps) is a hamlet shown as Swinsty.

However, if you visit http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html and search for Abbey Town, look at the 1868 map (map 2) oddly Swinsty is labelled as being close to the town centre.

Now the 1881 census (I am looking at the images)
I see pages of Abbey Town
Then starts Swinsty ... at the bottom of the third page of Swinsty is Swinsty (Guards Mill) or whatever.
At the top of the next page is the same (one household) Swinsty (Guards Mill) ... the rest of the page has only Swinsty ... the sixth household so labelled is LITTLE.
Most of the next page is also Swinsty but the bottom house is Washing Fold Lane.

Looking at the 1871 census
Simply labelled Swinsty was
William LITTLE and family (inc Margaret 11)

Six households further on was G----ds Villa - I think this shows the LITTLEs were not living there.  You will see what I mean when you go to your library. :)
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Thank you Geoff-E,

I today managed to get to a local library computer where I could view the original transcript, and I now understand what you were trying to explain to me.
Thank you for your patience.
And of course it is proof of always checking the original.
I have removed all reference to "Guard ??" from my Little family.

Regards
Jean
