Toxteth Villa, Halsall Lane, Aughton

Hi, Just wondering if anyone can help me.

I have found on the 1911 Census that my x3 great grandfather lived at Toxteth Villa, Halsall Lane, Aughton.

Does anyone have any idea where abouts this might have been?

I did a random 'google images' search and found this document attached, but I'm not sure if it is linked or not.

Any help would be greatly received.

Hi,

If you do a free place/street search on the 1911 census for Halsall Lane Aughton it shows that the Eureka Arms was also on Halsall Lane. along with Toxteth Villa (Foxteth Villa!). 

Go to Google Maps and type in Halsall Lane Ormskirk.  This is the one you want.  If you zoom in on Satellite view you should see that the Eureka public house is still there and marked.  It looks like a lot of the older houses have since gone, but a few rows still remain.   

Not sure where Toxteth Villa was though.

Aaah I assumed they it had been a typing error.  But was sure before I convinced myself it was 'Toxteth' that it was Foxteth

Hi,

I haven`t seen the image so I don`t know if it is Foxteth or Toxteth.  It has just been transcribed as Foxteth. Personally I would say you are correct with Toxteth.

Toxteth Villa could refer to a row of houses - it was common around the turn of the 19th/20th century to name a row/pair of houses as "villas" and even give them a name plate - there are a few up my own street that still have the plaques up. Just had a look up there on Street View but I can't see any with a name plaque - though one still has a date plaque so they may well have existed before renovations became common - I'm from that neck of the woods and know the houses up Halsall Lane were all extensively renovated in the 80s.
