Where to Go Next?
« on: Friday 09 July 10 16:16 BST (UK) »
I know where my great grandfather was in 1901 from census records.
I know what ship he left England on in 1910.
On the shiplist, my great grandmother is listed as Mrs.

I don't know how to track him between 1901 and 1910. He was about 28 in 1910 and she was 16 or 17. I don't know if they were married right before boarding the ship or if it was longer before. I'm wondering if they were actually married or if she was possibly a second wife. (Apparently there was some sort of controversy when they left.)

Any ideas for me? Thanks. :)

Presuming they were in England have a look at
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ for the marriage.

I would look at his family.
You have his location in 1901, if he was residing with his family then, where did his parents/brothers/sisters end up by 1911?
The same with her family if you know where she was in 1901.
Were they both from the same area of the country?
Depending on his occupation there might be records relating to that to trace. Or if her family and his have similar occupations there could be a connection there.

I was just about to post roughly the same thing!  If you know roughly where they were living, you might also be able to check parish records online.

ETA: looking at your other messages, this appears to be about them:

As William is described as a chauffeur, he may have been moving around the country a lot. The "Lord Roberts" who is mentioned there is probably:

Jorose, the link you posted that seems to be about them with the photo, that's hilarious. That's my family. I didn't know that was online. I have two copies of the book that is scanned out of: one copy is mine and the other is the first edition which was given to  the editor (my grandmother).  I've actually got the hard copies of most of that book in my basement.

In 1901, he was living with the family he worked for; Wray family in Thurlby. (They had a ton of household staff.) She was only 7 so I doubt there's anything to track for her.

I've never been able to fill in that gap between 1901 and 1910. So start with parish registries where he was in 1901?

Hi,

On the Ships manifest (SS Virginian) she is listed as Eleanor aged 20.

By the way I don`t think she is the Ellen Fields born Gainsborough in 1893.  If you search the free index at www.1911census.co.uk it would appear she is still there.

There doesn`t appear to be a marriage for them in England and Wales.  Could they have married in Scotland?
Just a thought.

Regards,
Mo

Thanks, Mo.

I wasn't sure that was her, but it was my best lead so far. Maybe I've got the date for her birth wrong. I'llsort through my papers and see if I've misrecorded it.

We've got the little book from the ship and it didn't list her first name. She's such a mystery. And I'm totally open to the fact that I might not have a correct first name for her or a correct birthdate. I suspect I will have to try to track him. Whether they married in Scotland or never did marry (bc who in Canada would know the difference), I have no idea.

Okay, I found a sheet in my notes with 1893 crossed out.

Here are what the Canadian end says....
William Edward Hunt (b.06/13/1882, Thorpe on the Hill, Linc)
Ellen Fields (b.02/04/1890)
Left the UK on SS Virginian.

I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't married or were married later.

Ah!

So he was born 13th June, 1882 and she was born 4th Febuary, 1890 if I am reading that correctly.  It always confuses me when the dates are written that way.

There is this baptism on the family search site:

St Paul in the Bails, Lincoln
Ellen Fields
born 4th February, 1890
baptised 6th April, 1890
Parents Joseph and Sarah Ann Fields
