Gloucesters WW1
« on: Tuesday 13 July 10 18:53 BST (UK) »
I am trying to research the military record of John Thomas Parkes, born 7 Oct 1879 in Aston, West Midlands. I hold his WW1 medals; 1914 – 1915 Star; the reverse gives his Number, Rank, name & Regiment.
(15794 – Private - JT Parkes - Gloucs)
1914 – 1918 British Medal & 1914 – 1919 Victory Medal
I know he served in The Gloucestershire Regiment, in France and was wounded 4 times, also suffered with the effects of ‘Mustard Gas’ long after the war and died 31 March 1928, Sparkhill, Birmingham.
Other than a WW1 Medal Roll listing at The National Archives, I am not sure if a service record is available or not as I didn’t find one?
Any pointers please

Only approx 30% of WW1 service records survived WW2 Blitz so your mans may have been burned :(
Have you looked on Ancestry?
Also you could search close numbers to your mans see if their records survived as they may have served in same battalion therefore have similar service history.
Local newspapers of the time also had photos of lads and enlistment nominals

Thanks Ady
Sick on discharge that would be the Gas, it was my Mother's Father, she said he was always in bed with a bad chest
But Silver War Badge didn't know that and not got it, what was that issued for?

The Silver War Badge, sometimes erroneously called the Silver Wound Badge, was authorised in September 1916 and takes the form of a circular badge with the legend "For King and Empire-Services Rendered" surrounding the George V cypher. The badge was awarded to all of those military personnel who were discharged as a result of sickness or wounds contracted or received during the war, either at home or overseas

It could have been due to gassing...
