Robert Grieve and Janet Shakelton
« on: Tuesday 13 July 10 20:02 BST (UK) »
I have a copy of the extract from the OPR of the marriage for the above couple which took place in Roberton on 28 May 1837. I would be grateful for any further information on them from any of the subsequent censuses.

Hi there, many thanks for that. The Robert Grieve (1849) is my great g'father and his parents were Robert and Janet. I had previously found the entry you had given but had discounted it because Robert would have been 15 ish on his wedding day, but now on re-considering that fact, that was not impossible for those times. I will have a look at the tree you refer to on Rootsweb. Again many thanks!

Hello

The only child I can find on the IGI - www.familysearch.org born to a Robert Grieve and a Janet Shakelton is a Janet Grieve ch.  22 Oct 1837, in Selkirk, Selkirk.

Freecen brings up a Grieve family - parents Robert, 24 and a shepherd  and Janet (20), in 1841 at Chesterhows - with children Elizabeth aged 23 months. and Janet 1 month.3

Regards,   Steve

Am out of credit on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, but that site only shows one child born to a couple of that name - 1834 to 1854.

Many thanks for that information. At this time these two sets of Robert and Janet appear to be different and further work necessary on my part, however with these pointers, hopefully a little easier. Thanks again, Zygi

Hi, there!

My ancestors were Robert Grieve and Janet Shakelton, but I have found information on them very scant.
I believe that they had 7 children:
Robert
Elizabeth
Margaret
Jean
David
Mary
Janet
and that they lived their lives in Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire.

The 1851 Census has them living in Hermiston, Lilliesleaf.

If you have discovered anything else, please do share!

PS My family tree can be accessed at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/
It is called nicholson grieve

Hi there, unfortunately I have very little to add to what I had previously posted. My GG grandfather married Janet Shakalton in 1837 in Roberton, Selkirk. I have an extract of the entry in the OPR.

They had a son Robert, born 1849, who married Euphemia Drummond in 1868, and their marriage register entry lists Janet Grieve ms. Shakalton as deceased.

The 1851 census you refer to lists the son, Robert, as aged 25 at that time, and the parents at 56 (Robert) and 46 (Janet) so I do not think that entry refers to my Robert/Janet.

The 1841 census has an entry for a Robert/Janet Grieve, aged 24 and 20 respectively, with children Elisabeth, 23 months, and Janet at either 1 or 7 months old, so I favour this group as my family, however cannot confirm it 100%.

Hope this helps.

My gr grandmother was Janet Grieve, born Dec 5, 1850, Lilliesleaf, to Robert Grieve and Janet Shackleton.  She married Alexander Scott in 1870 at Ashkirk, where they lived until 1880 when they emmigrated to Canada. I know that Janet had a brother named Robert born 1849 who married Eupphemia Drummond in Lilliesleaf in 1868.  Sounds like we have a connection....I hope.
