BMD Certificates and Cencus'
« on: Tuesday 13 July 10 23:15 BST (UK) »
Hi :)

I have been having trouble with my great Grandparents Richard George Thomas and Hannah Catherine Evans. I have recently recieved Birth Certificates of two of their children, and found them 1911 Cencus. I have been wondering how reliable Cencus' and Certificates are. There was a story that Richard and Hannah (Who went by Catherine) were never married, yet in the 1911 cencus it says that they are both married and into the first year of that marriage. Also on their Daughter Daisy's Birth Certificate in July 1911 Catherine is a Thomas - Formerly Evans. Yet i have been unable to find a Marriage for either of them. Would it have been easy for them to lie to the Cencus taker saying they were married, or would they have had to shown proof? Because in 1911 their ages were also far out, Richard was 12 years younger than what he really was, and Hannah was 5 years older than what she really was. So i am a little lost as to what information is correct and what isn't. Could anyone tell me how reliable they were?

I would also appreciate any help in finding the Marriage for Richard Thomas and Catherine Evans in 1909/1910 which would have probably taken place in Radnorshire.

Many thanks,

Keelan

The census information was provided by the Householder no proof of any kind was required to back up statements made on the census returns.

Accuracy depended entirely upon how truthful they were - ages are especially prone to change wildly from one census to another.

Hi
This is a poss you have assumed they married in Radnorshire but maybe they did't or did!
Anyway this is a possible marriage and not impossible
Marriage
Richard Thomas =m= catherine Evans 2nd qtr 1907 vol 11b page 321
district Llanfyllin (spans boundries Denbigshire ,Montgomeryshire and Powis )
Am I right in thinking Radnorshire is now in Powis and Radnorshire wants to get its status back as a county?
cheers cardiff :) ???

I suppose i have assumed they had married in Radnorshire, but likely they married elsewhere. Hmm. Where did you find that marriage entry if you dont mind me asking? It is possible although Richard would have been 43 and Catherine would have been 16 if it was the second quarter, turning 17 in the August of 1907. And they didn't have their first child until July 1911.
Yes Radnorshire is now Powys, although i haven't heard anything about it being returned to Radnorshire, although we still call it Radnorshire than Powys amongst ourselves.

Hi
FreeBMD is where I found the info.
I have found in the past that often where we think people have married or stayed turns out to be wrong. In this case I don't know but I just gave you what I found and what you had sort of asked for. regarding the Radnorshire status I though I had heared that somewhere, but may be not. I don't care  either way!
 cheers cardiff ::)

Hi,

FreeBMD! Must have a gander at that, thanks for the help, i really appreciate it! Aye, it could be called anything but i still think people would refer to it as Radnorshire. I'll follow up on the Marriage Info, family legend could be true though and they never could have married. I've a feeling Richard was Married Before - another mystery for me to solve!!

Many thanks,

Keelan
