Looking for any information on a James Goodfellow. All i know is he got married to Margaret Thorburn on 14 Oct 1827.   She died 4 Nov 1881
any information would be greatly appreciated

Hi princess,

I see from the 1881 census Margaret is living at Lindean Cottages, age 72 born Ashkirk. She also has a son aged 42 named George. This has brought me back in time to the 1861, 1851 and 1841 censuses.

So poor Margaret was widowed very early, her youngest son must have been only a few months old at the most. I have searched the Borders family history societies Gravestones Index which is online (very helpful FREE resource) there is one entry for a Goodfellow in Bowden. It’s up to you put I would suspect it’s your James.

Another thing the Borders FHS have been doing is indexing poor rolls. Margaret is described as a pauper in 1841 so if you can find the appropriate book it may contain more information about the family’s circumstances.
