Neath Electoral Registers
« on: Thursday 31 March 05 19:45 BST (UK) »
Hi.

Does anyone have access to the electoral registers for Neath beginning in 1902 who would be so kind to lookup William Jones at #7 or #10 Prospector Place? Thanks.

I am unable to do this search for you, but here is some information for you:

Information on years held, however there is no mention to where they are held: http://www.familia.org.uk/services/wales/neath_neath.html#ELECTREG

You could try contacting Port Talbot Reference Library to see if they hold them:

http://www.npt.gov.uk/libraries/lib_details/ptalbot.cfm

or Neath Library:

http://www.npt.gov.uk/libraries/lib_details/neath.cfm

All the best with your search

Regards Jen  :)

Hi Jen,

I emailed the Neath Library and they said the electoral registers for Neath prior to 1947 are at the Glamorgan Records Office. I cannot access the PDF files with my browser to see what years they actually hold. Would you mind checking the website for me and letting me know? Thanks.

and as separate series can be summarised as follows:

Format of the Registers of Electors
The ways in which the registers of electors were arranged has
altered periodically, according to the changes in local government.
This table illustrates the format of the registers at a given
date, and should help when ordering volumes for use in the
searchroom.
1840-1885 1 volume for each year covering the whole county
of Glamorgan
1886-1888 3 volumes for each year, covering the county and
borough lists. They are divided into three volumes:
Eastern and Southern Gower Mid and
Rhondda
1889-1914 2 volumes for each year arranged roughly in
alphabetical order by electoral district. They cover
the county and borough lists.
Except: 1894-95, 1914 -when they are bound in 5
volumes– Eastern, Southern, Gower, Mid and
Rhondda
1915-1917 No registers were produced, with the exception of
one for the Southern Division of Glamorgan in 1915
1918-1973 7 volumes for each year for the Glamorgan
constituency, covering the divisions:
Aberavon Llandaff and Barry Ogmore
Caerphilly Neath Pontypridd
Gower
The registers for the Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil,
Swansea, Aberdare and Rhondda boroughs (where
available) are bound separately
Hope it helps

Newbie,

Thank you for the info. Neath doesn't appear to be listed does it? It is a town near Swansea and Cardiff. There is a mention of ALL Glamorgan electoral registers being available in the info you sent. I wonder if that means it includes Neath? Hopefully someone here knows where the Neath records are for sure.

Regards,

Lynn

I think I've found it, it would be part of the West Glamorgan Record Office, in which case the Glamorgan Record Office (from the information I gave you) does not hold the records you need
..........Swansea 1840-88, 1950, 1952, 1954-55, 1959-73"
I think you need this address -

Swansea Borough:
West Glamorgan Archive Service,
County Hall,
Oystermouth Road,
Swansea,
SA1 3SN
01792 636589
archives@swansea.gov.uk
http://www.swansea.gov.uk/archives

hope that helps you,
Newbie

If Swansea hold them then they are available in in the Search Room at County Hall Swansea (address is the one above given by Newbie) & The Swansea Reference Library http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=521 . I have posted what Swansea have available here, some years they have cover all of Glamorgan, so Neath will be included in those:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,8630.0.html

Swansea do not hold all records for Neath, It can be quite a confusion when people ask for records for the Neath area. I would think that they may be accessible from the Neath or Port Talbot Access Points. I know that Port Talbot electoral rolls are available(many are missing) & Neath Access point mentions holding the County of Glamorgan electoral register, 1845-46, but no more are mentioned:
