Help Dating TinType Photos
« on: Tuesday 20 July 10 12:41 BST (UK) »
Have 3 tin type pictures that were found in my Grandmothers photos. Trying to attach them to family tree. I figure they must be relative of hers to have kept them. Would like to know around the time they would have been taken and what age to you think they are :-\. Nothing is written on back of them has far as photographer stamps.

Unusual to see tintypes from as late as this,by this time they were really only used by itinerant photographers but these look like they were taken in a studio.
The first 2 are the earliest at mid - late 1880's with the third a bit later at early 1890's.
These are in reverse as you can see by the way the men's jackets are buttoned which is normal for tintypes.

Wondering also if the 1st picture look like brothers and sisters or husband and wife. Same with the last picture are these girls the same as the top. Having a hard time deciding. If I look at the first picture the guy and girl on the left look like they have wedding bands.

She does indeed. Corsetry, reinforced with whalebone or spring steel, was mandatory for young ladies who began "figure training" at the age of 10 or 11. Women lived their whole lives in restrictive corsets that interfered with digestion and circulation.

Then there was "tight-lacing", even more severe corsets worn on special occasions. The Victorian fainting couch is a relic of this custom, and a necessary piece of furniture used by women who needed to catch their breath in between appearances at the party or ball or whatever they were wearing the tight-lacing for.

Cheers,

As the 1st. photo is in reverse the rings are actually on their right hands.
This is how they would have looked at the sitting.
It's possible knowing this they've swapped hands so that it appears to be on their left hands.
My guess is they are 2 married couples & this maybe a wedding pic.

;D Well that makes sense. With the 2 pictures looking like they have the same background type setting. I was thinking the older couple of being the parents and the 2 couple pic being the kids.
