Rev William Joseph Larkin from Ireland
« on: Thursday 22 July 10 05:41 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for the birth place of a Roman Catholic priest Father W J Larkin who left from Liverpool or the next port of call Cork Ireland and was the Chaplin on the 'Duke of Newcastle " vessell which arrived into Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Dec 1862. He then moved on to the Westcoast, South Island of New Zealand. Moved then to Lawrence, Otago New Zealand before being moved to Hawaii.
We beleive he new a Mary O'Neill in Ireland who also emmigrated to NZ and made Father Larkin guardian of her 6 children before she died in May 1874.
He was responsible for builing Catholic Schools and created a great deal of controversy where ever he preached. Any info would be much appreceiated.
Regards
Pauline

Have you read through all of this?
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=OW18780413.2.17.1&srpos=35&e=-------10--31-byDA---2%22William+Joseph+Larkin%22-all
The connection seems to be that he conducted her (second?) wedding in NZ so they may not have known each other before that.

Google books has "The lion and the wolfhound" partially indexed, which I think says that Larkin was b. County Galway, matriculated at Maynooth for the diocese of Clonfert 27 August 1857, ordained in 1860, curate in Eyrecourt 1860 to 1861.

It looks like this has a lot on Father Larkin so it may be worth trying to find a copy of this book (maybe via your library).

Hi Folks. Declan Kelly, the former archivist to Clonfert diocese, is later this year publishing a biographical dictionary of the deceased clergy of Clonfert. He has the most extensive knowledge in this area and has advised that Fr William Joseph Larkin was born in Ballinasloe, County Galway on 31st July 1831, and died in Baltimore USA in late April 1899. Declan has also told me he has no problem if people wish to email him directly for any further information. Declan also says Fr Larkin is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Washington DC.
