1851 Census Lookup - Patcham.

    Hello all, and greetings from Queensland, Australia.
I'm hoping someone will be able to help me in my quest to trace the birth of my husband's ancestor.  I've been trying to track him down in Patching, Sussex.  But after checking out the 1891 and 1901 Census, I think he may have been born in Patcham.
     His name  WILLIAM BUTCHER b. 1845? Patcham.  His father's name was BENJAMIN BUTCHER (given on his Marriage Certificate of 1877).  I don't know who his mother was.
      Any help would be much appreciated.

i have the 1851 census for patcham on fiche.i hope to get to the library this week,but can't promise  because the kids are home from school this week and life's a bit hectic  .i will definitely be going next week so will have a look for you.

there was only two william butchers and both at the same house.

i think his birth place might be patching,because i have found in 1871 a benjamin butcher born 1843 patching(possible brother)also living in london.i can't find william in 1871

There is a William Butcher born Sussex living at 4 Laura Place in Tower Hamlets with wife Hannah in 1871.  P564 F114    Could that be him?  He is 28 and a Carman.
If you give us his wife's name that might help to find him.

the info i think carol has is, in 1881 when he is married to susannah.
he has a daughter living with him born 1863 who can't be susannah's daughter so he must have been married before.

It is odd but it looks as if the daughter is a widow on the 1881.   Can't think what else the bit means in that column.  If so she may be a daughter in law???   He is a carman though so that ties in with the 1871.

just looked at 1871,and they were living in mile end old town and hannah is the right age.
