Thanks, lovely  pictures Jane.  Can you tell me more about Gassing - its part of the process of making stockings - burning off thread.  It sounds very dangerous and George did die young at 40 and I wonder if it was from breathing in all those burnt bits of cotton.  They used a room which was free from drafts -

There a certainly a lot of Blaggs - do yours have any connection with Cheshire?

Hello you Blagg descendants,

I am looking up Blaggs for a friend in East Yorkshire, her father was Francis Blagg his father Frederick Blagg from Ordsall near Retford he had the New Inn at Retford (1901 census) age then 49. He was a Rail Porter in 1891 and 1881. Lost track then in 1871, think he must have been hiding in Sherwood forest.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards to all, oly

Hi Frances

At last I have found out about gassing. They passed the thread through a gas flame to burn off the loose fibres.

I know this is an old thread but wanted to add something, more to do with the Goulson family really but the Blagg surname may crop up somewhere else as a result.

The Blagg/Goulson marriage mentioned brings in the Goulson family which also connects to Retford during the 1890's (hotel proprieter) and another arm of the Goulson family which links to Manchester/Salford areas from before the 1840's through to the present day.

Hi
Is anyone still looking into the Blaggs from Nottinghamshire?
We just discovered my great great grandmother's grave, she was Fanny Blagg, daughter of George and Sarah.
