Looking for any information on Masefield William Smith , born Christmas Day 1897 , Gorey , County Wexford , Ireland .
Thought to have sailed for Canada in the early 1920's ( possibly 1923-25 ) .Worked in Ontario at the Juddhaven and Royal Muskoka hotels but nothing heard of since 1940 .

Going to answer my own post !!!

After ploughing through the new microfilm digitization at the Library and Archives Centre , there on page 2252 ( of 5377 !!! ) was one Masefield Wiliam Smith .

He sailed from Cork on 12 October 1922 , and was destined to stay with a friend in Toronto .

Any ideas on where I go from here ??? Would he have needed a Social Security/National Insurance number to start work ???

There's unlikely to be much trace of his working life unless those particular hotels kept records. (As a British citizen moving to Canada when he did, no naturalisation records either).

If you know where he was around 1940 you could try for the 1940 National Registration:

Old Toronto newspapers online at:

Problem with the 1940 Registration in Canada is that payment appears to be limited to Canadian or USA cheques and currencies , anyone managed to get around this ?

To obtain the 1940 Registration it would be in Canadian funds and only Canadian funds, not sure how you think you would get around this??

If I order certificates in UK I pay in GBP and wouldn't expect them to accept any other currency  ???

The LAC website says:
Quote
Prepayment of $45 (plus applicable taxes) per search, payable in advance by credit card or by cheque or money order to Statistics Canada is required. Prepayment of $45 (plus applicable taxes) per search, payable in advance by credit card or by cheque or money order to Statistics Canada is required.

A money order is the same thing as a postal order - you should be able to purchase an international money/postal order in Canadian funds. It says nothing about cheques or credit cards from non-North American banks not being accepted. With a cheque, all you have to do is write Canadian funds after you write out the amount. With a credit card, just give them the number and they will put $45 Canadian on it and your credit card company will convert it and show it in your currency on your statement.
