Harriet Hillier Moreton MOLONY
« on: Saturday 31 July 10 07:54 BST (UK) »
Hi I am trying to find out a bit more on Harriet Hillier Moreton Molony. I have been to Rookwood Cemetery for a Samuel Moreton who was born l848 and
died June l888 which is my relation.  On the grave it has Harriet Hillier wife of
John F. Molony born l826 and died l872 Samuel Moreton the only son of the
above but it is not right. Can you have a go and check it out.
Diane

Hi there are two Samuel Moretons with the same mother Harriet.  One is
from Maitland and one from Sydney.  My husbands Moreton is Samuel Moreton
was the son of Samuel Moreton and Harriet from Waterloo.  In this grave
of Molony at Rookwood it says that Samuel Moreton was the son of  John and
Harriet I cannot find any son of John F. and Harriet Molony only a Walter  born in l860 at Scone.  I have a feeling that this Samuel Moreton might have been
put into this grave by his mother.  Samuel Moreton the son was supposed to
be born in l848 and he died in l888 the same as is on the grave at Rookwood.
It is pretty confusing I am not sure what I am doing sorry.  Is there any way to look up Harriet Moreton who married John Molony where they may have lived on the electoral roll in l859.  Then by the BDMs she was supposed to marry a William J. Offer at sydney in l884.  Not know where she died.
Diane

Hi Diane,

If you have stated it correctly, it doesn't say that Samuel is the son of John. It simply says it is the son of the above. So, It is likely, as you say, referring to his mother only.

Hi Diane,

"I have a feeling that this Samuel Moreton might have been put into this grave by his mother"

Samuel's mother Harriet died in 1872, sixteen years before her son Samuel, so she did not have anything to do with the burial or the headstone inscription.

Harriet's second husband and Samuel's step father was John Frederick MOLON(E)Y.  Samuel was only fourteen when his mother remarried, and it is likely that the headstone was erected by later members of the family who did not know that John was not Samuel's natural father.

Have located mother's grave and Samuel is with her, but can't find John.

Thought this rang a bell, Debra.  ???

The William Offer marriage isn't your Harriet, as she was deceased in 1872.  :-[

Her father was William and her death was registered in Redfern.

I guess Samuel is not necessarily buried in the grave, but just included on the headstone.  I have a few of these myself.  I agree that the inscription refers to Samuel being the son of Harriet only.

"Then by the BDMs she was supposed to marry a William J. Offer at sydney in l884.  Not know where she died."

This is not your Harriet.  Your Harriet MOLON(E)Y died in 1872 as the headstone states.  Her death notice is here http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/18768164?searchTerm=harriet%20moloney  , and her death reg is on the NSW BDM indexes.  Documentation is really important, and purchasing transcriptions of marriage and death certs will confirm that you are on the right track.
