Well he is definately Scottish as he has the right type of hat and a tunic with cut away tails for wear with a sporron.  The odd thing is I can't recognise the cap badge.

Hi

Both in HLI, would appear that James is on the left (facing) and John on the right with cap badge of the HLI.

Regards he 79th Training Battalion.  The 20th (Reserve) Battalion, were formed at Ripon in October 1915 from depot companies of 18th Bn.
1 September 1916 : converted into 79th Training Reserve Battalion in 18th Reserve Brigade at Montrose.

Hi

There is a John A McMillan's medal card, who served with the 17th HLI.  He entered France on 22 November 1915 and gained all three war medals.

His regimental number is 16238, and it mentions he was 'Demobbed' - thus he survived the war.

Also lots of John McMillans in HLI; as well as lots of James McC's wo served with the HLI.

Hi, Thankyou both for your research, I know John Allan McMillan came home, I have his death, but James Kay  McMillan is a mystery, as he married in 1917 and by 1919 his wife remarried, stating she was a widow, I have not been able to find any death records for him here in Scotland, so I was assuming that he died in the war, although I have not been able to find any records for him, but thanks again for your help

Have you checked Ancestry?

If there are any records for James, some folk might be able to help if you have an idea of where and when he was born and where he resided and his next of kin's name, presumably his wife.
