Missing RODDA family - Camborne 1860s
« on: Monday 02 August 10 21:56 BST (UK) »
Hi

1861 Census in Camborne has John Rodda, 32, Copper Miner, his wife Rose (Rosamond, born Doddiscombsleigh) 30 and children Arabella Mary, 8 (born Doddiscombsleigh), Elizabeth 4 born Camborne, John 2 born Camborne and Sarah Jane, 3 months born Camborne.

No trace of family in 1871 or subsequent ones................except Arabella marries John Wallser on 7 October 1871 in Kingsbridge, Devon

Any help most appreciated :)

Phil

Hi Phil

They do appear to have dropped off  the face of the planet, don't they  ???  ???

Not getting anything at all - except the following which you probably already have:

In 1881, John & Arabella are living in a Caravan in East Stonehouse, Devon.
John is a licensed Hawker b London abt 1850 and Arabella is 27, b Pymouth Devon
Children: Sarah 9, Thomas 7, William 5, Joseph 3, Helen 5mths - all born in various places in Devon.

In Census 1871 - they are  living together as man & wife ( pre-marriage):

1871:  "White Lion Inn" Barrack St - Dodbrooke, Devon
RG11 /  Piece: 2205 /  Folio: 64 /  Page: 62
Lodger: John WALLSER 21, married, Hawker, b Stepney, Mdx
Lodger: Isabella WALLSER 18, married, Hawker, b Chudleigh, Devon

^ They are among the 10 Lodgers at the Inn
^ Dodbrooke come under the Kingsbridge Reg District

Also just to mention for reference - the marriage you have of John RODDA and Rosamond BUTT married on 25 February 1854

It's a long shot - must be a lot of John Roddas around that time.

A bit strange that the Daughter is the same age as the son-in-law and that the father of the daughter is called RODDA - none of this ties in does it?

I think Arabella's family has either gone abroad or there has been a disease.....!!

With only one son, it's impossible to tie up any potential marriages as there are so many (without ordering marriage certificates)

There are TWO deaths for a John Rodda in the Redruth district - Sept 1861 5c, 172 and June 1862 5c, 191

There is also a Rosetta Rodda marrying in Penzance Sept 1862 5c, 465.........

Further to this post from a while ago, I have ascertained that the husband of Rosamond Rodda, John, died in 1861.

This seemed to set a very unfortunate set of happenings.

Rosamond, together with her children, ended up in the workhouse in 1862 and also imprisoned for running, what could ony be described as, a brothel.

One of her children, John, died in 1862, leaving Elizabeth, Sarah Jane and Arabella.

Arabella is accounted for as she marries John Wallser in 1871.

No sign of the others - could Rosamond have re-married? She was known as Rose and there is a marriage for a Rosetta in 1862.

Any help would be appreeciated.

Phil

Thank you

the Rosetta who married in 1862 was 19, so not yours

The John Rodda buried 25 May 1862 was 4 of Troon Row in Breage

You can use the GRO index to check age at burial for the period where age doesn't appear on Freebmd
