Hi. If you are sure Dennis b 1898 is yours, then this looks like him.
 But take your pick  ;D ;D ;D

1901 RG13; Piece: 3815; Folio: 22; Page: 36.
19 Windsor St, Oldham
Dennis Gallagher  head 40 labourer , general.   ALL BORN OLDHAM
Ellen J Gallagher  wife 37
John J Gallagher 18 cotton peicer
William Gallagher 16 "
Ellen J Gallagher 10
Walter Gallagher 8
Mary E Gallagher 5
Dennis Gallagher 2

There is another Dennis , but he is born Preston. 1896. with a Dad named Dennis  ::)
You should be able to decide which one by Dennis jnr`s marriage certificate.
It will give ( hopefully) fathers occuption.
RG13; Piece: 3946; Folio: 38; Page: 39
39 Wilbraham St Preston
Dennis Gallagher 43 navvy b Belfast  Ireland
Mary Gallagher 32 wife b Preston
Dennis Gallagher 5 son b Preston.

Incidently, this census page has the place of birth  Lancashire  Preston typed in on all names except those from elsewhere. I `ve not seen that before. ???

Hi josey, wilcoxon and Lydart.....infact hello again to everyone and thanks for taking the time to reply.

Less than 24 hours since I signed up here and, thanks to wilcoxon, I've at least now got a starting point. Although I can't be 100% certain of my facts regarding the year of my grandfather's birth, I am 99% certain that I recall him telling me years ago that he was born, and grew up, in Oldham. Also, having now seen the info posted, I seem to remember my late mother once saying that her father was born into a family with 5 or 6 children....so my guess is that the first of the two choices posted by wilcoxon is the most likely.

It's a small world we live in isn't it Lydart? There was once a time when I'd have to explain where Heywood was to people because they'd never heard of it. These days I meet people all over the country, and in other countries too come to think of it, who have lived here at some stage in their lives. Queens Park is still the same as it's always been during my lifetime....I was there with my two grandchildren only two weeks ago.

I`ve tracked Dennis Snr  b Oldham back to 1861. I won`t post details as I don`t want to spoil it for you if you want to DIY  ;D

Unfortunately his mother is a widow, with Dennis aged 2, and even though there is another son  with an odd name aged 18, also b Oldham I can`t locate them in 1851. ???

You're a star - thank you very much for that. I've never done anything like this before and I'm struggling to get going with it. It looks like I may need all the help I can get so anything at all is much appreciated.

Unfortunately I didn't get home from the salt mine until late last night and couldn't keep my eyes open long enough to do much searching online. After seeing the info you posted regarding Dennis Jnr for 1898 I did manage to trace a reference to a Dennis Snr b Oldham 1859 via FreeBMD.

I wouldn't want to put you to any trouble, but if possible could you please let me have the info re Dennis Snr 1861 either by PM or posted here? Please don't worry about spoiling anything for me, if it wasn't for this forum I doubt I'd have got this far for a long time to come.

Many thanks

Alan
