Hello everyone,

I've just signed up to Rootschat and decided that the polite thing to do for a first post would be to say hello.

In the hope of learning something about my ancestors, there's no doubt I'll be asking lots of questions here in the future......but hopefully answering the odd one or two myself.

I'm interested in finding out as much as possible about both sides of my family whose surnames are Moore and Gallagher......primarily in the Oldham, Rochdale, Heywood and Manchester areas.

Hi Ted & Allan, thanks for the welcome.

Having had a good Root (no pun intended) around here, I'm almost sorry I've left it until now to look into my family history as I find it all fascinating.

Unfortunately I know very little about my maternal family and absolutely nothing about my father's side, so it looks like I may have my work cut out for some time to come.

Thanks for the links too. I'll be looking into those, digging out whatever scraps of information I can find amongst the few bits of paper I have and having a good old read here. Perhaps then I will at least have enough information to be able to ask for help.

When you get round to asking your questions try and tell us what you already know and give as much detail as possible.  Also what you are trying to find out

You wouldn't believe the number of people who make posts like

We all love a challenge but most of us don't like wasting our energy finding something only to be told 'Oh I knew all that'

Hi Linda and Jane,

Thanks for the welcome from you both. As I mentioned earlier, I feel that I should have done this kind of thing a lot earlier in my life and just hope I can build some kind of family history to pass down to my own descendants before popping my clogs myself.

Lecture understood Linda . I can imagine how frustrating it must be to have done all the work for someone else before finding out you needn't have bothered. Don't worry, I'll be sure to have as much info as possible to hand before asking questions.

Jane - I'm only a stone's throw from you in Heywood. It just so happens that I believe my maternal grandfather was born in Oldham in 1898. His name was Dennis Gallagher and I have already found a reference to the name in Oldham for that year. Unfortunately, until I've done a little more digging, I can't be 100% sure of the year or of the birth place. I wasn't aware of the Local History Centre in Oldham, so thanks also for that.....I've just checked their opening times on the website so may pop over there myself some time soon.

Not long now until my ability to PM kicks in too I believe......
