Emma,

As I understand it, you are stuck trying to trace further back from your William TAYLOR, born c.1830. The census doesn't help much and your best hope may be finding the record of his marriage to Mary.

I may have found their marriage in 1857 so you could send for the certificate.

My reasoning; - After William TAYLOR died in 1877, his widow Mary married a John WINWOOD in Bridgnorth. I transcribed Mary's Father as John BEAMAN, a Labourer.
Mary consistently stated on the census that she was from Leebotwood.
FreeBMD has a marriage listing for the June quarter of 1857, Church Stretton District, which includes Leebotwood. The four names shown include;
Mary BEAMOND and William TAILOR.
My poor quality copy of the Leebotwood 1841 census seems to show a John BEA...N, a Collier, with his family that includes a Mary, age 2.

I'll post more information tomorrow on the TAYLOR family in Bridgnorth.

Gwynne

Hi Gwynne

It has been an awfully long time since I first started this thread of messages on the Taylor family but I am still having difficulty!

If you have any information on the Taylor family that I mentioned earlier in this thread I'd be very interested to know what you have.

Kind regards

Emma

Emma,

I've had a look for your TAYLOR family in my Bridgnorth records. I've not looked at the census records which either you've already got or you can get elsewhere.

The burial of [the first husband of Mary, nee BEAMAN]
William TAYLOR, Labourer, age 46 of Moat Street was buried on 24 Dec 1877. Grave No.2735
Consecrated.

This enabled his wife Mary to re-marry at St. Mary's Church, Bridgnorth on 11 Dec 1881.
John WINWOOD, age 33, Widower. Labourer of Hollybush Road. Father = Samuel HARLEY ! a Labourer.
Mary TAYLOR, age 42, Widow of Hollybush Road. Father = John BEAMAN a Labourer.
Witnesses = Andrew WILSON and Mary Ann JONES.
[comment - Widow Mary was living next door to John on the 1881 census - listed as WINHOOD]

One son of William TAYLOR & Mary was Samuel who married Alice SEAWARD on 30 Oct 1892 at St Mary's Church, Bridgnorth.
Do you have the marriage details?

Some burials in Bridgnorth Municipal Cemetery.

Martha TAYLOR, Spinster, age 29 of Underhill Street. Buried 17 Sept 1891. Grave No.2841 Con.
[in my opinion - one dau of William & Mary]

Alfred TAYLOR, Carter, age 46 of 32 Cartway. Buried 3 July 1920. Grave No.0439 Con.
[in my opinion - one son of William & Mary]

Samuel TAYLOR, Retired Railwayman, age 67 of 8 St John's Street. Buried 11 Dec 1939. Grave No.1626 NewCon.
[in my opinion - one son of William & Mary]

Alice TAYLOR, Widow, age 69 of 8 St John's Street. Buried 1 April 1943. Grave No.1627 NewCon.
[in my opinion - the wife of Samuel]

William Harry TAYLOR, Roadman, age 40, of 8 St John's Street. Buried 30 Oct 1940. Grave No.1627 NewCon.
[same address so perhaps a son of the above Samuel and Alice]

Mary WINWOOD, Wife of John, age 78 of Bicton Asylum. Buried 13 May 1914. Grave No.2841 Consecrated.
[in my opinion - nee BEAMAN, formerly TAYLOR]

One of the daughters of William TAYLOR and Mary was Jane born c.1860.
Jane married at St Leonard's church on 15 July 1883.
Henry CASELEY, Labourer, Bachelor, age 22 of St. Leonard's. Father = Edward CASELEY, a Tailor.
to
Jane TAYLOR, Spinster, age 23 of St. Leonard's. Father = William TAYLOR, a Labourer.
Witnesses = Mary HAYNES and John BAKER or BARBER.

One of the daughters of William TAYLOR and Mary was Mary born c.1861.
Mary married at St Mary's church on 25 Dec 1894.
Albert SEAWARD, Packer, Bachelor, age 28. Father = William SEAWARD, Shoe maker.
to
Mary TAYLOR, Spinster, age 26. Father = William TAYLOR, Labourer.

This couple were buried;
Mary SEAWARD, wife of Albert age 67 of 9 Bernard's Hill. Buried 6 March 1933. Grave No.1623 NewCon.
Albert SEAWARD, Carpet packer, age 73 of 9 Bernard's Hill. Buried 22 March 1939. Grave No.1625 NewCon.

One of the daughters of William TAYLOR and Mary was Alice born c.1867.
Alice married at St Mary's church on 23 Aug 1885 to William CASELEY.
Do you have the marriage and burial details?

William TAYLOR and Mary apparently had another child you didn't know about.
Christened at St Leonard's on 18 April 1877.
Lucy TAYLOR. Parents William TAYLOR, a Labourer & Mary of Moat Street.

Lucy was buried on 14 Feb 1878, age 1, of Moat Street.

From the book "Bridgnorth - An Army Roll of Honour 1914 - 1918.
[comment - entry in the book means that a person served, not that they died]

TAYLOR A.W. of 76 Bernard's Hill, Tpr [Trooper] 3rd Shropshire Yeomanry.
TAYLOR Sidney of 76 Bernard's Hill, Pte. 1403 F Coy, 4-KSLI [F Company , 4th Kings Shropshire Light Infantry]
[comment - 76 Bernard's Hill was the address of their Grandmother, Emma SEAWARD on the 1901 census]

Hopefully that's sufficient for now.

Wow that's fantastic Gwynne! Thank you for taking the time to look into this for me. My family have been planning to visit Bridgnorth cemetery to see the graves of our Taylor/Seaward relatives. In fact I think we are going in the next 2 weeks. It is very helpful to know which graves we need to go and see.  :)

There are perhaps approx. 13,000 burial plots in Bridgnorth cemetery.
I've known people spend all day aimlessly searching for grave plots.

Although I've provided you with the plot numbers, you need both the plan and someone that actually understands the complex numbering system.

Let me know if you want me to locate the grave plots with you on a mutual agreed date.

Thank you for your kind offer but we are going with one of our relatives who lives in Bridgnorth. He visits some of the graves you mentioned and remembers where they are. That will at least give us a head start.  :)
