Janet Milligan born 1847
« on: Friday 06 August 10 09:18 BST (UK) »
Janets parents were John Milligan born in Kirkcudbright and Nicholas McMurray also born in Kirkcudbright.  They moved to Lancashire, and were inBury.  Several of the children stayed there but others moved to West Derby.  John was a shipwright and Janet was born in 1847. Could anyone verify that when a woman died was  she registered under her maiden name, or her married name.  Having trouble finding her husband and have found all of her other siblings bar one other.

Sarah Milligan was the other she was born in 1860, Janet was born in Kirkcudbright.
any help appreciated

In scottish tradition, Nicolas  is a feminine and likewise Christian up until about the 1850s.  So her mother was Nicholas.

Hi Trudym,

Have you got some dates mixed up because the only Janet I can find with those parents was born in 1857 not 1847? Her father was a Stonemason not a Shipwright.  Janet was born Liverpool not Scotland amd they lived in Liscard Cheshire on the 1861 census.   The rest seems to fit  :-\

Regards,
Mo
P.S. Allan take a look for a Micholas Milligan in the 1861 - what do you think?

Still do not agreed on the date of 1857.  of two minds.  Janet is born 31 March 1847 and christened at St Marys, Bury.
However, according to Johns father, William who married Isabella Hornel in Kirkcudbright who is our gggrandmother and father, on the monumental stone he erects in Kirkcudbright, John is a ships carpenter and dies before 1857.  Im trying to get to the bottom of the mystery, because our John does marry Nicholas McMurray in Kirkcudbright, now here is the mystery.  There were other John Milligans drowned at sea, is his son mistakenly named as one.

Whatever the reason, he is very much alive after 1857, and yes agreed that stonemasons are in the family and that was his trade and several of his sons.
It is important that we get the truth and not just any old thing.  So heres hoping my question may get answered which was When Janet Milligan dies, will the record be under her name or her husbands, because it can make a huge difference.  I notice on the Scottish inscriptions a woman is often  given her maiden name and all of the family are mentioned whether they are buried there or not, which is a great tradition.

Unfortunately no crystal ball so if anyone can help would greatly appreciate.

Agreed born in Bury

John, her father dies before 1880 census

Thanks for your interest, it is appreciated.

If Janet dies in England or Wales then the surname registered would be the surname she was known by.  If she was married then it would be her married surname.  However, if her marriage broke up and she was living with someone else it was quite legal to be known by his surname, her death be registered in that surname and buried under that name.
