Abingdon Baptisms - WESTALL & variants
« on: Saturday 07 August 10 00:44 BST (UK) »
Can SKS please check the PRs for parentage for these 2 lads lodged in the Abingdon Workhouse 1851:

WESTALL, William  9  Pauper Scholar  Abingdon St Helen
WESTALL, Henry    6  Pauper Scholar  Abingdon St Helen

They may have been brothers:  Henry's birth registration appears in FreeBMD in the 2Q 1844 but there are a couple of alternatives for William.

Any help will be most appreciated, particularly if any WESTALL bargemen feature in the Abingdon PRs.

Bless you, Ian, for such rapid responses.

I can't yet make a connection between my Newbury/Speen WESTALLs and those at Abingdon, but both groups favoured the William and Henry names.  My bargeman William did not make 'old bones' to enable him to feature in the 1841 or 1851 Census with his origins but I am hopeful that, some day, I'll be able to link him to others.

Your help is much appreciated.

Hi do not know if this will help you but on the 1881 census there is a William Westall born 1843 at Abingdon . In 1881 he is living at 17 South Street Battersea with his family. REF RG 11 PIECE 0650/84 PAGE 66.

Many thanks for your input, Sandy.  Every little helps, particularly when pursuing orphans.

I was told many years ago that the Henry of this family vanished without further trace in the UK after running away from the Workhouse.  As 'my' Henry adopted a first Christian name that did not feature in civil registration of his birth or 2 baptisms, I did wonder if an absconder might have taken a similar precaution to conceal his identity.

Hi Alan

I fear we may have some crossed wires here.  According to the 1871 Census, Richard's son William was a Blacksmith.  I've not been able to locate him again until 1911 when he's recorded a Widower aged 69, formerly a Blacksmith, born Abingdon, in The Derby Union Warehouse [sic] according to the FindMyPast transcription. ::)

William the Chemical Lab Assistant, husband of Maria Ann, appears to have died 1Q 1908 aged 66 in St Geo H Sq District.  In 1911 his widow and a son remained in St George Hanover Square Parish.

Do you have proof, i.e. details from a marriage certificate, that substantiate paternity of William the Chemical Lab Assistant?
