NORWAY- Marie Olsen

Marie Olsen was born in Loiten, Christiana, Norway to Ole Christensen and Berte Maria Jacobsdatter in 1858.

Her sisters Frederila Olava (my great grandmother), Karen Kristina and Caroline and their brother Hans Jacob all emigrated at different times  to New Zealand in the 1870s.

They all married here and (apart from Caroline), had families here and lived the rest of their lives here.

What happened to Marie?  -I can find no trace of her coming to NZ . Did she marry and then emigrate or did she remain in Norway or go elsewhere? - just a missing piece in our family jigsaw puzzle.

Any leads or information would be very much appreciated.

See 51 962 Ole Christensen worker, aged 48, born "Hedemarken" a fair bit down.

Many thanks for that link. It  is definitely my family. Hans, Karen, Fredrikke Olave and Caroline all emigrated to New Zealand where they settled in and around Wellington. Fredrikke Olava is my great grandmother. They all used the family name Olsen

We cannot find what happened to the only other sibling Marie -  as all of the others ended up here in NZ, what did she do? Did she stay in Norway? marry and emigrate under another name or just emigrate to a different country?

They did not all travel together, Karen was here earlier than Olava who was sponsored by Karen's husband Carl Lamberg. Olava was the only non English speaking passenger among 274 others who were from England, Ireland and Scotland arriving in 1879 on the "Arethusa" which had sailed from London. Hans Jacob may also have been here earlier. Caroline arrived in 1884 in time for Olava's wedding to Swede, Theodor Frans Bergstrom (or Roslind)  known in New Zealand as William Francis Anderson.

Also it would be nice to know what happened to the parents -  while we have birth, conformation and marriage details we do not have any information of whether they also emigrated and where and when they died.

So nay help on these matters would be very much appreciated

Happy New Year to our friends in the Northern Hemisphere -  while we are basking in 30c sunshine I read that Sweden, Norway andland and much of Europe has been having a very co;d snowing winter.

Fredrikke Olava is here with her mother apparently married to another so presumably her father died between 1865 and 1875.

There are one or two Marie Olsens not living with parents, of around the right age. Familysearch has an Inger Marie born to a Ole Christensen and Berte Marie Jacobsdatter 1 Feb 1859 bapt 20 Feb 1859 Vestre Aker which can be found here. Could this be your Marie

  Thanks for that information Kaysii. It certainly appears that Marie (or Inger Marie) was not living with her parents at the time of the 1875 census. At the time of that census she would have been 16 years of age - would she have left home, married or died?
The birth advice certainly ties in with her age and parents, so I should now seach for her under the name Inger. I have not found a marriage in NZ under that name.

You say you have the confirmation details of the others but do you know which church and which year they were confirmed. As she would have been confirmed between the ages of 14-16 it might help locate her after 1865 which would make it easier to look up deaths, marriages or emigration. I wouldn't expect her to be married by 1875 though.

It's possible if it is the same person that she did not use the name Inger.

Hello Jan, Berte Maria Jacobsdatter was born in 1830, baptised 28 March 1830, Gjerdrum, Akerhaus, Norway, and was Conformed 18 April 1846. She was married Ole Christiansen at Old Aker Church, Loiten Rone Sept 14 1851. I don't have the details of her second marriage.
Ole Christiansen was born 7 Jan 7 1822, baptised on 27 January 1822 Loiten Church, Confirmed Oct 9 1934 Loiten Church.
