Peat family Trimdon
« on: Monday 09 August 10 18:37 BST (UK) »
This is totally confusing me, please can anyone help ?
John Peat b 1915 Coxhoe married 1943 Durham Rececca Peat b1918 Trimdon.
His parents were John Peat b1878 Kelloe and Ada Smith b1885 somewhere in Newcastle. Her parents were Thomas Peat b ? married 1907 Gateshead  Rebecca Westgarth b1888 Shildon.
I'm trying to find out if John and Rebecca were cousins.
Does anyone know of this family please ?

Hi Kattysoo,

This seems to be Rebecca's father Thomas in 1891

1891
RG12/4057 74 56
Trimdon, Durham
8 Short Wood Row

Robert Peat, head, 35, Coal Miner, b. Durham Sedgefield
Margaret Jane, wife, 28, b. Trimdon
Elizabeth, dau, 9, scholar, b. do.
Thomas, son, 5, b. do.
Ellen, dau, 2, b. do.

The 1881 census shows John - provided I've got the right John! - with parents Robert and Mary in Coxoe, Robert born 1858 Kelloe.

At first sight, it seems pretty unlikely that 2 Roberts were brothers.

Thank you both  but I'm more confused now as the lady I'm helping is certain her dad (John)'s parents were John Peat and Ada  nee Smith  and her mam (Rebecca)'s parents were Thomas Peat and Rebecca nee Westgarth.
Ada came from Newcastle way somewhere and the others as far as she knows from around the Trimdon area.

Hi Katty,

John Peat isn't that rare a name, therefore I may bell have looked at the wrong boy. Have you identified John's family in 1881? If so, can you give use the details?  :)

Hello again, its a headache with both being called Peat and not a lot of idea exactly where they were born.
I have found a John Peat in 1881 born Kelloe 1878 with parents Robert and Mary so that must be the paternal side .....he has a brother Thomas born 1880 who could be the one who married Rebecca Westgarth on the maternal side making John and Rebecca junior, cousins ....but there is another Thomas Peat born Trimdon 1886 with parents Robert and Margaret.
She doesn't want to apend any money on certificates so I honestly don't know how to find out which is the right Thomas.....

The free search on this site www.1911census.co.uk helps you find out that the Thomas who has a wife Rebecca was in Gateshead district, born ca. 1886

From there, you can search here
http://www.GenesReunited.co.uk/records/srlanding19x1.aspx?searchtype=c1911
for a Robert Peat born ca. 1886 in Gateshead district and you'll see his birth place
