Hi,

I have just received a copy of an 1880 marriage entry from GRONI, for a marriage that took place in the Parish of Lower Bodoney.

The picture below shows part of the certificate where, in the column for Father's Name and Surname, there is something written that definitely isn't the father's name and is the same for the groom and the bride.

Now I can just about cope with the couple being described of 'Full' age ::), but not knowing the father's names - grrr!!!!

Has anyone seen this before and knows what it means?  My first thought was 'dead' or 'dec'd', but why no name?

Any assistance or comments appreciated!

Best wishes

Think it says (dead) for both of them- quite common to find on pre-1900 certificates.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Aghadowey,

Thanks for your comment, which confirms my suspicions.

It's the first time I've come across this and it came as quite a surprise.  Mind you, I'm spoiled by the information you get on Scottish certificates and don't have much experience with Irish ones.  I'm working on my wife's grandmother's tree at the moment and as Gran does not know much beyond her mother's parents, we were hoping the marriage certificate of her grandparents would help us work a wee bit further back.

Ah well, will need to think of other ways to get more information.

Best wishes
