Edward ACTON of Ipswich 1805-1860
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 11:45 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for the baptism of Edward ACTON, A surgeon and an Apothecary who lived in Grundisburgh and according to the census, he was born in Ipswich.  He married Sophia Appleford Lewis WOOLLS before 1832, but I have not found the marriage.  Sophia came from Fareham and she was the Vicar's daughter.

Any help on Edward or suggestions would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Jenny

Hi Jenny

An Edgar Acton was bp.12/8/1813 St. Peter, Ipswich, son of John and Elizabeth.

Also in Grundisburgh in 1841 are:

John Acton      65         Independent      Not born Suffolk
Elizabeth Acton  65                                        ditto

Ref. HO107 - 1020 - 8 - 8 - 8

With so few Acton's about in Suffolk seems likely these are Edwards parents.

By 1851 John Acton as died and Elizabeth has moved to Sussex

1851 - Hastings St. Mary in the Castle, Sussex

Elizabeth Acton   Wid.  77     Annuitant      b. East Farleigh, Kent
Eliza Acton   Dau.    51              ditto          b. Battle, Sussex
Catherine Acton   dau.  47        ditto           b. Ipswich, Suffolk

Ref. HO107 - 1635 - 386 - 60

Looking at the IGI found John Acton married Elizabeth Mercer 7/7/1798 East Farleigh, Kent.

NBI shows a John Acton bc.1776 bur.14/1/1847 Hastings All Saints, Sussex.

Hi Annette

Thanks for that info.  I know that he was Licensed with the Apothecary's Society in London in 1827, so I believe that Edgar would be incorrect, unless he was baptized a few years after his birth!!  It does happen.

I will keep your info to hand as I do know that his widow Sophia Appleford Lewis ACTON (nee WOOLLS) move to Brighton.  I have found the couples marriage which was at Chapel Royal, The Tower, which is another path to cross.

Thanks again

Jenny

Hi Jenny

Afraid you have misunderstood me - I wasn't suggesting that Edgar was Edward - was just showing that this John and Elizabeth Acton were in Ipswich around the relevant time and when Edward was in Grundisburgh in 1841 so were they so they seemed likely to be his parents.   Can find no trace of Edgar so he may well have died.  On-line coverage of Ipswich parishes at this time is sporadic to say the least plus there were few Acton's about.   John clearly a man of means (unlike most) as shown as 'Independent' and this again indicated to me a connection between them.

Hi Annette

Sorry, yes, Edgar could be Edward's brother obviously my brain was off somewhere else.  As his parents went to Brighton, it does look quite probable.  I am hoping to find his Apprentice papers with the Apothecaries Index which might show light on his parents.

Thanks again

Hi

Thanks for the Suffolk Medical Link.  I now have to find an Acton who was a brewer from Ipswich.  Maybe this John ACTON was a brewer.  From the newspapers on-line I had found the marriage notice and various others from the Ipswich Journal.  I have contacted the Guildhall library (LMA) and am waiting a response.

Thanks

Jenny

Hi Jenny

I did a 'google' for John Acton, Brewer and discovered his eldest dau. Elizabeth 'Eliza' was born 17/4/1799 Battle, Sussex, d.13/2/1859 Hampstead.   She was famous in her own right as a Poet and Cook.    Shown as eldest of 5 children - parents were indeed the couple whose marriage I found earlier i.e. Elizabeth Mercer and John Brewer.   Apparently the family returned to Suffolk shortly after her birth.

As you rightly say, it's now about finding John Acton, Brewer.
