Needle in a haystack? (MANNION)
« on: Sunday 03 April 05 00:00 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Very recently I discovered an Irish ancestor in my family history so now I'm about 3% Irish!

I'm very new to Irish geneology unlike the English side which I have been tracing for about 15 years.

The first census I found in Cheshire 1871 just said "born in Ireland" but I've recently found an 1861 connection which says Galway County.

With the limited info I have (see below) what are my chances of getting any further and can anyone help me?

Children:
=======
Bernard Mannion (c. 1847)
Honor Mannion (c. 1844)
Matthew Mannion (c. 1832)

Parents:
=======
Jane (c. 1811)
Byran, though could be Bernard!   :-\

Thanks in advance,

Damian ???

Just realised I go all my calculated birth dates wrong so have modified the original details.  Still hoping some can at least get me on the right track.

Hiya Smouse,

I looked at http://www.failteromhat.com for Mannions in Galway and spotted a large number of people with this surname were listed in Griffiths Valuation of Ireland when
it took place in the county in 1855.

All the Best, Christopher

I am doing some family history research for a friend and there is a Bernard Mannion,born about 1847,Ballygar,Co.Galway.He married in 1876 and stated that his father was called Bryan and a farm labourer.One of the witnesses was Matt Mannion.
I have not seen that census entry and would be grateful if you could give me any more details so that we can see if there is a connection or if it is just a coincidence.

It does sound very similar but my feeling is that this is just a coincidence.

Anyway what else do I know...

Bryan was listed as a shoemaker on the certificates I have but jobs do change.

Bernard was 24 and single in 1871, living in Cheshire.  In 1881 he was 34, still claimed to be single and still in Cheshire.  After this I have not been able to find him.
