William Peppitt
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 17:03 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone on this site can help me trace one of my husbands ancestors as I have hit the  proverbial brick wall. I am looking for any information on William Peppitt born c1859. I believe he was born in Staffordshire but have no proof of this. He married Emma Bailey in 1882 in Wellington, Staffs but his fathers name does not appear on the marriage certificate indicating that he was either illegitamate or that he had had a falling out with his father perhaps?
They went on to have a number of children, one of them being Job Peppitt who then went on to have William Peppitt, the father of Jeffrey, my husband. From the time William married Emma the family lived and worked in the Hanley area of Stoke-on-Trent and this is why I think he may have been born there but I can find no trace of him. The name has had various spellings, namely, Poppitt, Peppiat and Peppit.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated as I cannot take this line any further back until I have found Williams birth.
many thanks
Jane

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

The 1891 census for Brownlees Staffs is transcribed as PIPPETT - all b Hanley Staffs

William  33 iron forge man
Emma   30
William   8
Lizzie 4
Job   2
RG12 Piece 2846 Folio 130 Page 25

The absence of a fathers name on his marriage cert would be more of an indication that he was illegitimate

There is a William Pippett birth in the December qtr 1860 but it was in West Bromwich and also a William Poppet birth Dec qtr 1858 in Dudley

However - the registration district for Hanley at that time was Stoke upon Trent

all born Rowley Regis, Staffs

If this is your William he would only have been around 7 when his father died,  I think it is usual to name the father on the marriage certificate and deceased is add after his name, so I would say your assumption of him being illegitimate would be correct.

I have had a few birth records and marriage certificates with just dots where name/occupation of father should be and deceased in brackets after the father's name on a marriage certificate.

William and Emma went on to have a number of children, one of them being Job Peppitt who then went on to have William , the father of my husband.

From the time William married Emma the family lived and worked in the Hanley area of Stoke-on-Trent

Re: the posts from CaroleW for William & Emma PIPPETT &  family on 1891/1901 census  - could this Job born 1889 Hanley be your husband's grandfather  :-\

Have you checked out the 1911 census, there appear to be quite a lot of PEPPITT in Stoke on Trent, try Job, it's free too search but you require credits to view. If he's still with his family perhaps this will give you another clue as to where his father William was born

A Job PEPPITT married in Stoke on Trent, it appears they had 7 children, if you don't have this info. you can find these details by searching FreeBMD link below

Hi everyone

many thanks for the messages. I have all of Williams descendants, right up to my husbands father, its just that I cannot take William back any further than his approximate birth date of 1859 due to his fathers name being missed off the marriage certificate. I have thought that he could have been born outside of Staffs and have tried to find him on the other sites, including bastardy records but, so far, no joy.If I could just pinpoint his place of birth I could send for his birth certificate which would at least give me his mothers name. Still, I will persevere, he's out there somewhere
many thanks
Jane

As he was married in 1882 it might help pin him down in 1881
