Hi

This is very strange. On the 1891 census Emma and Henry have a mother in law staying with them called Hannah Bailey :o

Will type up fully shortly

Hi Evie,

That could tie in with the marriage I found

Henry JONES name on same page
Emma BAILEY
Dec q 1878 Stoke on Trent

look forward to the full details shortly  :o

marriage 1878
Henry JONES 24 (1854) father David JONES
Emma BAILEY 22 (1856) father Thomas BAILEY
7th Dec. 1878 Wellington, Stafford

This seems to tie in with census below

1881 RG11/2718/94/7
51 Wells Street, Stoke on Trent

Henry JONES age 27 (1854) Hanley Stafford Colliers Banksman
Emma age 26 (1855) Hanley
Sarah Ann Jones g/dau age 5 (1876) Hanley
David Jones g/son age 10 days (1881) Hanley

Edited
Henry's mother Sarah Ann living with them, so this explains grand children

Hi

1891 RG12, 2167, 79, 43

21 Victor Street, Hanley

Henry Jones, Head, 37, pit banksman, Shelton, Staffs
Emma, Wife, 35, Hanley, Staffs
John T, son, 8, Hanley
Rachel, dau, 6, Hanley
Ethel, 3, dau, Hanley
Henry, 1, son, Hanley
Joshua Hughes, boarder, 49, labourer, Wolverhampton
Hannah Bailey, wid, mother in law, 53, living on her own means, Shelton, Staffs

1881

RG11, 2719, 50, 37

44 West Street, Hanley

Joshua Hughes, Head, Wid, 40, Iron Works Puddler, Wolverhampton
Hannah Bailey, Wid,  Servant, 46, House Keeper (dom), Hanley
Emma Bailey, dau, single, 19, Potters spur maker, Hanley

The age for Emma on the 1881 census is a little way out but it is strange that they are living with the same Joshua Hughes (I think) as in 1891

Hi
Yes, there was a Hannah Wilding. Williams occupation was given as Forgerman and Thomas was down as a Metal Maker with a comment that for Maker read Mounter

Hi Jane

Can you also tell us whether Thomas BAILEY was deceased on Emma's marriage certificate, please

Have you found Emma on 1881 or any other censuses yet ?

I thought this Emma could have been the one that married William PEPPITT but have ruled her out - see below for details

1881 RG11/2718/103/25
103 Waterloo Street, Stoke on Trent
William CLIFF Head 40 Longton Potter
Annie CLIFF wife 38 Hanley Dressmaker
Emma BAILEY wife’s dau. age 17 (1864) Hanley Paintress

Marriage
17/9/1872 Wellington
William CLIFF 32 bn 1840 father Joseph CLIFF
Annie BAILEY 32 bn 1840 father John MARE

marriage

1863 Wellington
Anne MARE 22 (1841) father John MARE
Frederick BAILEY 22 (1841) father James BAILEY

so could it be this Emma with widowed mother Hannah

1881c RG11/2719/50/37
44 West Street, Stoke on Trent
Head Joshua Hughes Widow
Hannah BAILEY Widow  age 46 born Hanley House Keeper
EMMA BAILEY dau. age 19 born Hanley Potters Spur Maker

Have searched again 1881 census for a William PEPPITT bn1859 but nothing.

Did another search with just his first name of William bn 1859 living Stafford area  over 1000 hits came up but not with a surname of PEPPITT, it’s such a shame you can’t narrow down using his occupation for Forgerman.

As for the other witness to his marriage Hannah WILDING, the are 13 hits on 1881c but unfortunately no William ? visiting or lodging  - was hoping we may get lucky

As it’s proving difficult to find William PEPPITT (with various spellings)  bn 1859 occ Forgerman prior to his marriage in 1882, I’m wondering if he has used an alias name on his marriage certificate to Emma Bailey, or was he out of the country  :-\

The things that appear to be consistent from 1882 onwards are :-

1) his first name William PEPPITT/PIPPETT
2) birth date 1859
3) birth place Stafford
4) occupation Forgerman

So why can't he seem to be found on 1861, 1871 & 1881 census  :-\

Evie

I still think this Emma married Henry Jones and not William Peppitt, due to the fact that Joshua Hughes is still living with Hannah and family - but I could be wrong

I had a look again and still cannot see either William Peppitt or Thoams Bailey on the 1881 as it is possible to search by occupation but will have another go

That certainly seems to fit,  if that's correct we still need to find Emma BAILEY on 1881 census, either on her own or with one/both parents  :-\

Thomas was down as a Metal Maker with a comment that for Maker read Mounter

I found this Thomas BAILEY on his own transcription says U (unmarried)  :-\

1881 RG11/2733/102/9

4 Newbons Bgs, Stoke on Trent
Thomas BAILEY Um Head 33 Stoke on Trent Iron Moulders Core Maker

**EDITED**
re: above 1881 census living with Thomas BAILEY

RG11/2733/102/9
4 Newbons Bgs, Stoke on Trent
Thomas BAILEY Um Head 33 (1848) S on T Iron Moulders Core Maker
Sarah STEELE Um 27 Longton Housekeeper (Head)
Emily BAILEY STEELE 9 (1872) Longton
(Thomas’s daughter)
Thomas STEELE 6
John STEELE 1

IGI it showed him as unmarried but he must be widowed.

Don’t think this is your Emma BAILEY with her father because of the age
difference she's only 9  she married in 1882 age 21 ???

It may be an idea to confirm her age by looking at the original census so you can rule her out -  just on the off chance they may have transcribed her age incorrectly  :-\

Hi again
Yes, Thomas was alive in 1882 - the date of the marriage by the way is Christmas Eve. I have figured that Hannah Wilding was probably Emmas friend as I cannot see a connection in any other area

Hope this helps, you are being very thorough

Jane :)
